Box Score CLEVELAND, Mississippi – On a hot day in the Delta, the Lady Statesmen of Delta State took on the Blazers of Valdosta State in a Gulf South Conference matchup. DSU dropped the match, 2-0, to the Blazers to fall to 1-5 on the season and 0-3 in league play.
Kailey Bryan had a good chance to score in the early minutes of the game on a breakaway ball, but an offsides changed possessions in favor of VSU.
The Blazers struck first in the 12
th minute when Abbi Edwards locked in with Margaret Stauffer who found the back of the net, putting VSU up 1-0.
Scoring was at a standstill, leaning in favor of Valdosta, for most of the second half. VSU's Edwards connected again with an assist but this time finding Zahimara Fantauzzi, scoring the go-ahead goal and furthering the Blazer lead 2-0.
With seconds ticking off the game clock,
Erin Tucker worked off two defenders late in the second half, but VSU's goalkeeper halted her forward progress with a diving save. The Blazers went on to win the contest 2-0.
The Green-and-White suffered offensively losing the battle in shots 11-4 and 6-2 in shots on goal. Tucker and
Lanie Little were responsible for the two shots on goal with
Tabitha Hayden and
Lakyn Cryder adding one shot each.
Katie Swaine suffered the loss in goal but snagged four saves.
DSU will be back on the pitch Friday, Sept. 26 in Livingston, Alabama as the Lady Statesmen take on West Alabama. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
