Lady Statesmen Soccer Drops Contest with West Alabama 3-1

Box Score LIVINGSTON, Alabama – The Delta State University women's soccer team was on the road for the first leg of a two-game conference road trip, taking on West Alabama. DSU dropped the match 3-1 to fall to 1-6 on the year and 0-4 in Gulf South Conference play.
 
West Alabama got the scoring started early in the first half when Nicki Gears found the back of the net to put the Tigers on top 1-0 at the 15:10 mark. Gears was named GSC Player of the Week on Monday.
 
Just four minutes later, freshman Lakyn Cryder scored the equalizer, her first goal of the season. The score remained tied at one all going into the half.
 
The second half opened with 20 scoreless minutes until UWA struck again in the 65th minute, putting the score at 2-1 in favor of the Tigers. The Red-and-Black were not done with their offensive strike as Lydia Sutcliffe scored her second goal of the season, giving West Alabama the commanding 3-1 lead with 12 minutes to play in the contest. The Tigers went on to win three goals to one.
 
Rebecca Deegan led the way with two shots, both being on goal, while Lanie Little and Cryder contributed one shot apiece.
 
Loveland, Ohio native Katie Swaine played the entire 90 minutes in goal. Although Swaine allowed three goals, she grabbed ten saves, including one on a penalty kick.
 
The Lady Statesmen complete their conference road trip on Sunday, Sept.28 against Alabama-Huntsville. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. in Huntsville.
