Overtime Goal Lifts Statesmen Past West Florida


PENSACOLA, Fla. – Ryan Pickup scored just 35 seconds into overtime to help lead the Delta State University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the University of West Florida on Friday at the UWF Soccer Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sebastian Knabke opened the scoring, with his first goal of the year, following an 11th minute corner kick when he collected a rebound off a shot from Daniel Deblaere.
  • Soren Yuhaschek tied the match in the 27th minute, as he scored following a UWF corner kick.
  • The Statesmen were outshot 12-5 in the first half. UWF held a 5-3 shots on goal advantage.
  • DSU had a chance to win the contest in regulation, but Jacob Murray was able to save Amine Rahmani's 81st minute penalty kick.
  • Pickup scored the winner just 35 seconds into overtime, when a long throw in from Jaxon Lambert found its way into a crowded defensive area. The resulting shot from Pickup snuck its way past Murray.
  • The Argos outshot the Statesmen 15-5 in the second half, including a 10-7 edge in shots on goal.
  • Jacob Hauenstein finished with nine saves, his second highest total of the season.
 
STAT OF THE GAME:
  • Hauenstein and the Statesmen defense were able to hold off the Argos in the second half, despite facing 15 shots
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Statesmen have recorded back-to-back victories over West Florida for the first time in school history. The Argos have the most championships (6) in Gulf South Conference history.
  • DSU handed UWF just its second loss in eight home matches.
  • The victory kept postseason hopes alive for the Statesmen. DSU must also win its next contest to remain in the hunt for a GSC Tournament berth.
 
 UP NEXT:
  • The Statesmen travel to Mobile, Ala., for a contest with provisional GSC member Spring Hill College. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. It is the last regular season contest for DSU, as the Oct. 28 match at Talladega was canceled.
