DSU Softball Avoids Sweep Against Union

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Lady Statesmen softball team of Delta State University spoiled the series sweep against Union, taking game three, 8-2, on Monday afternoon at University Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One
  • Union struck first in the top of the first inning when Carter Mansolino sent an RBI-single up the middle, giving the Lady Bulldogs the early 1-0 lead.
  • Delta State responded in the bottom of the third when Amber Adcock executed the squeeze play to score Kassidy Tally, tying the game at 1-1.
  • UU regained the lead in the top frame of the fifth on Carlie Brickley's solo homerun to go up 2-1 over DSU.
  • The Lady Bulldogs used four runs on four hits in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 6-1.
  • DSU went scoreless in the seventh to fall to Union 6-1 in game one of the doubleheader.
  • Three hits were recorded by the Delta State batting order. Tally, Kaitlin Moore, and Andrea Cutts all recorded singles.
  • Katie Justice (1-2) suffered the loss, pitching 4.1 innings and giving up two earned runs on four hits. Three pitchers were used by DSU in the loss.
     
Game Two
  • After trailing most of the series, Memrie Corley got things started in the bottom of the second. The junior outfielder singled up the middle, later coming around to score on an RBI-double from Jessie Rodriguez. With Kara Lane Nowell in scoring position, Taylor Holland's sacrifice fly down the right field line was deep enough to score Nowell. Two more runs crossed the plate courtesy of RBI-singles from Tally and Moore. Delta State jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
  • DSU tacked on four more runs on three hits in the bottom of the third, executing on Union fielding errors and taking the commanding 8-0 advantage.
  • The Lady Bulldogs scored lone runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the lead but still trailed 8-2. They went on to lose by the same deficit.
  • Tally and Memrie Corley led the offense in game two, both contributing multi-hit performances.
  • Taylor Johnson (4-1) earned the win, pitching 4.0 innings and giving up one earned run on three hits.
     
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Junior Kassidy Tally is now one stolen base away from tying the Delta State and Gulf South Conference record for career stolen bases. The record is held by former Lady Statesman Alyse Hasty with 135. Tally also extended her hit streak to 12 games and has reached base in the last 14 contests.
  • Taylor Holland now holds the top spot for most career walks at Delta State with 76. She passes head coach Casey Bourgoyne-Charles.
  • Delta State outhit Union 10-5 in game two, recording more hits than the two previous games combined.
     
WHO'S NEXT
Delta State will travel to Searcy, Ark. on Tuesday, March 17 to take on the Bison of Harding University. The doubleheader is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
