Scouting The Wolves
For the second straight week the Statesmen are taking on the GSC leader, taking two-of-three from then conference leader Alabama-Huntsville last weekend. Tyler Hutch is hitting .392 with nine doubles, 17 RBIs, 32 runs scored, and nine steals and Garrett Hayes leads the team with two home runs and 27 RBIs and has a .362 average with four doubles and two home runs. The Wolves are expected to start right-handers Jamie Sexton, Tyler Goldsmith and Matthew Norton. Sexton is 5-1 and has a 2.98 ERA, nine walks, and 46 strikeouts in 54.1 innings. Goldsmith is 2-1 with 2.70 ERA, 23 strikeouts, and 11 walks in 30 innings. North has a 2.45 ERA and is 4-2 with 23 strikeouts and seven walks in 47.2 innings.
The Series
The Statesmen hold a 15-4 lead in the all-time series and have won 10 straight, including six consecutive at Ferriss Field. In 19 meetings, the Statesmen are 8-1 at home, 6-1 in Carrollton, Georgia and 1-2 at neutral sites. The two teams have met seven-times in the GSC Tournament with the Green and White holding a 4-3 record.
Last Time Out
Delta State could not overcome a 7-1 deficit against Ouachita Baptist University falling to the Tigers 9-4 at Rab Rodgers Field in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, on Wednesday. Reuben Miller and Jace Melby combined for three RBIs for the Tigers while Brandon Cummins, Ben Pickard and Jacob Swiney had RBIs for the Statesmen.
GSC Weekly Honors
Delta State's junior, outfielder Jacob Swiney and senior, pitcher Jonathan Moody were named the Gulf South Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday. Swiney went 8-for-13 (.615) with a homerun, a double, and five RBIs over three games to help the Statesmen two wins over No. 6 Alabama-Huntsville. The Biloxi, Mississippi native went a combined 3-for-8 with a double in Saturday's doubleheader split. The junior capped the series on Sunday, going 5-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs, lifting the Statesmen a 9-5 win in the series finale. Swiney is hitting .381 with two doubles, a home run, 16 RBIs, and seven runs scored through 13 games. Moody struck out a career-high 10 batters in his lone start of the week against UAH. The Millington, Tennessee, native went the distance in the seven inning affair, yielding two-runs on four hits and one walk in the 3-2 win. Moody is 2-1 in six appearances, with five starts, and 31 strikeouts, against 11 walks in 32.1 innings pitched this season.
Chasing 800
Delta State University head baseball coach Mike Kinnison is eight wins away from 800 career victories entering the UAH Series. In 19 seasons as head coach, the Benton, Mississippi, native is 792-250-2. Kinnison, who is a member of the Misssissippi Sports Hall of Fame, joined the 750-win club last season. The former All-American shortstop at Delta State picked up his 750th career in a 5-2 victory over West Alabama (2.15.14).
Statesmen At Home
Delta State is 3-1 at Ferriss Field this season. The Green and White have outscored visitors 32-7 and are hitting .383 with 11 doubles, a triple, two home runs and 31 RBIs as a team. Jonathan Andrews has a .714 average with two RBIs in four home games and Brandon Cummins has a .563 average with three doubles, a triple, a home run and six RBIs. Matt Barrett is hitting .444 with two RBIs and Ethan Gill has a .400 average with seven RBIs and three doubles while Jacob Swiney is also hitting .400 with a double and three RBIs. Trent Giambrone is hitting .385 average with five runs scored and Ben Pickard is hitting .333. with a double and two RBIs. Colton Welch has a .333 average with four RBIs, four runs scored, and a home run.
The pitching staff has a 2.10 ERA with 34 strikeouts, nine walks in 30 innings pitched. Senior Jonathan Moody has 1.08 ERA with six strikeouts and Drew Milligan has a 1.93 ERA with 14 strikeouts in 9.1 innings.
