Softball Defeats No. 1 North Georgia to Split at PBC-GSC Southern Softball Showdown

COLUMBUS, Ga. – After dropping a 10-9 decision in eight innings to Armstrong State, the Delta State University softball team bounced back in the nightcap to defeat defending national champion No. 1 North Georgia 3-2, at the PBC-GSC Southern Softball Showdown on Saturday at South Commons Softball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
 
  • DSU scored four runs in the top of the first, using an RBI singles by freshmen Jordan Jones and Morgan Kazerooni. Rainer Hodges and Abi Gibson were responsible for the other two runs. Hodges was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Gibson drew a walk.
  • The Lady Statesmen capitalized on an error to take a 5-0 lead in the top of the second, but ASU responded with Michelle Breen's first of two solo home runs.
  • DSU took a 6-1 lead in the fourth when Kazerooni drove in her second run of the contest with an RBI double in the fourth.
  • The Pirates responded with an eight run inning that included three home runs.
  • In the seventh, after Hodges scored on a wild pitch and Jones produced an RBI groundout, Kaitlin Moore used a two out RBI single to right field that scored Kassidy Tally to send the game to extra innings.
  • Armstrong State took advantage of a two out error to pick up the victory in the bottom of the eighth.
  • Taylor Johnson (0-1) took the loss as she allowed four runs, three earned, in 4.2 innings of relief. Starting pitcher Taylor Tucker allowed six runs on eight hits.
  • The Lady Statesmen combined for eight hits, 10 walks and 10 strikeouts off three different pitchers.
  • Kazerooni led the way with three hits in five trips, while Jones added two.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 2
 
  • The Lady Statesmen manufactured the first runs of the game in the second when Hodges drew a bases loaded walk and Kristen Mitchell scored on a wild pitch.
  • North Georgia responded in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI groundout by Hannah McSwain.
  • Madison Zoeller picked up her first of two hits in the third when she drove in Moore, which proved to be the winning run.
  • After leaving the bases loaded in the second, the Nighthawks left the sacks full again in the fifth, but DSU pitcher Katie Justice forced a groundout by McSwain to end the inning.
  • UNG had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, but Justice forced a groundout with two runners in scoring position to end the game.
  • Justice (1-0) went the distance, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits.
  • Macy Watkins (0-1) allowed three runs on nine hits. DSU took advantage of six walks by the freshman pitcher.
  • Zoeller, Tally and Gibson collected two hits apiece.

  • North Georgia left 13 runners stranded in game two.
 
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Tally stole four bases in game one, giving her 165 for her career, which is the active lead in all NCAA divisions.
  • Moore doubled in game two, giving her 48 in her career, which is two away from tying the school record.
  • The win over North Georgia marked the first time since a 1-0 victory over Valdosta State on April 22, 2012 that the Lady Statesmen recorded a victory over the No. 1 ranked team.
