Lady Statesmen Topple MC to Earn Three Game GSC Sweep



CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Kaitlin Moore and Morgan Kazerooni recorded two hits apiece to help lift the Delta State University softball team to its seventh straight victory in a 3-2 decision over in-state rival Mississippi College on Sunday at University Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

 
  • The Lady Statesmen opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Kazerooni doubled to left center, scoring Moore.
  • MC answered in the top of the second on an RBI single by Cheyenne Mathews.
  • Moore continued her hot hitting in the third, giving DSU a 2-1 lead, when she hit her first home run of the season.
  • The Lady Statesmen added a run in the fourth on a RBI infield single by Kassidy Tally.
  • Ty Buckley got MC to within 3-2 in the sixth inning with a solo home run to right field.
  • The Lady Choctaws had their best chance to tie the game in the seventh, but had a pair of runners get caught stealing at third base, including one to end the game.
  • Taylor Johnson (2-2) allowed two runs on six hits, with three strikeouts and two walks. Taylor Tucker, who earned both victories in Saturday's doubleheader sweep, earned her first save of the season, as she recorded the final two outs.
  • Penny Nichols allowed three runs on seven hits, with three strikeouts and a pair of walks.
  • Moore (2-for-2) and Kazerooni (2-for-3) were the only DSU players to record multiple hits.

  • DSU finished with seven hits, three were for extra bases.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
 
  • DSU has scored first in all but two games this season.
  • DSU opened a season 3-0 in the Gulf South Conference for the first time since a three-game sweep of Southern Arkansas in 2005.
  • Kazerooni has recorded doubles in four of the last five contests.
  • Moore is 14 of her last 21 at the plate, with four doubles and a home run.
