Softball Picks up Two Victories at SAU Tournament

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Delta State University softball team used solid offense and defense in a pair of victories in the Southern Arkansas Tournament at Lady Mulerider Field on Saturday. The Lady Statesmen earned a 2-0 victory over Newman University, before pounding out 16 hits in a 12-4 victory over Rogers State.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
 
  • DSU scored the lone runs of the contest in the bottom of the first when Kassidy Tally scored from second off a throwing error and a sacrifice fly by Morgan Kazerooni that scored Abi Gibson.
  • The Lady Statesmen managed just one hit in the final six innings.
  • Newman left a pair of runners on in the second and fourth innings.
  • Katie Justice (3-1) went the distance, scattering seven hits.
  • Kate Smith (0-2) allowed one run on two hits with one strikeout and a walk.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 2
 
  • Madison Zoeller opened the scoring in the top of the first with an RBI double that scored Gibson.
  • RSU responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
  • In the third inning, following an RBI single by Moore, Cara Nunez recorded her first hit for the Green-and-White, an RBI single down the left field line.
  • Nunez tied the contest at four in the fifth with an RBI single up the middle that scored Kazerooni.
  • The Lady Statesmen exploded for five runs in the fifth inning that included an RBI groundout by Gibson, an RBI double by Moore, a run-scoring single by Kazerooni and the second career home run by Zoeller, which scored Kazerooni.
  • DSU tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh on RBI singles by Kara Lane Nowell, Gibson and Kazerooni.
  • Taylor Tucker (1-0) allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Taylor Johnson allowed just one hit in two innings of relief.
  • Rachel Jones (0-1) allowed nine runs, three earned on 11 hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 5.2 innings. Mayra Helguera surrendered three runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of relief.
  • Moore led the way for DSU with four hits in five at-bats.
  • Kazerooni and Zoeller were each three-for-four, while Nunez was 2-for-4. Zoeller had three RBIs.
  • Gibson, Moore, Kazerooni and Nunez drove in two runs apiece.
 
 
STAT OF THE DAY
 
  • In the victory over RSU, the Lady Statesmen scored eight runs with two outs.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
 
  • With her double in the top of the sixth, Moore smacked her 51st career double, which broke the school record held by former teammate Amber Adcock.
  • Justice picked up her second career shutout in game one.
  • DSU has scored first in all but one of its games this season.

  • The Lady Statesmen complete play at the SAU Tournament with a pair of contests versus Lone Star Conference foes Texas Woman's University and Cameron University. First pitch is scheduled for noon. Both games will be carried live on the Statesmen Sports Network.
