No. 4 UNA Holds off No.21 DSU

FLORENCE, Ala. – No. 4 University of North Alabama scored five of its eight runs with two outs to help earn an 8-5 victory over the Delta State University softball team on Saturday at the UNA Softball Complex. With the victory, the Lions swept the three-game Gulf South Conference series to move into first place in the standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • For the second straight game the Lady Statesmen took the lead in the top of the first, as a ground ball to first base by Kaitlin Moore scored Kassidy Tally. 
  • The Lions answered in the bottom of the inning when Reagan Tittle hit a solo home run to left center.
  • UNA took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second on a two-out RBI single by Mackenzie Roberts.
  • The Lady Statesmen answered in the third on a well executed first and third steal that saw Abi Gibson steal home.
  • UNA took the lead for good in the fifth, when Harlie Barkley doubled down the left field line, scoring Tittle, and Anna Gayle Norris singled to center, scoring Barkley.
  • The Lady Statesmen got to within 4-3 in the sixth, as Kristen Mitchell delivered a two-out pinch hit single that scored Jordan Jones.
  • UNA responded with four in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run by Danielle Cruickshank and a two-run shot by Tittle. The Lions scored their fourth run of the frame on an RBI single by Norris.
  • DSU put a scare into the home team in the top of the seventh, as Kaitlin Moore delivered a two-RBI triple with one out, but the next two batters were retired to end the game.
  • After holding the Lady Statesmen to just one hit in game two on Friday, Raven Cole (17-1) allowed five runs on six hits in 6.2 innings. Hillary Carpenter recorded the final out to earn a save.
  • Taylor Johnson (9-5) allowed eight runs on 14 hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Johnson forced the Lions to strand eight runners.
  • Moore and Tally recorded two hits apiece to lead DSU.
 
STAT OF THE DAY:
  • UNA scored five of its eight runs with two outs.
        
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • With her triple in the fifth, Moore has recorded an extra base hit in 16 contests.
  • The five runs allowed by UNA starter Cole matched the most she has allowed this season.
  • The Lady Statesmen were swept in a GSC series for the first time since  March 21-22 2015 (Alabama Huntsville).
  • After recording four steals in three games at North Alabama, Tally needs just five to move into third all-time in NCAA Division II.

DSU is returns home to face Christian Brothers University in a three-game GSC series on Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
