Shorter Eliminates Lady Statesmen from GSC Tournament

FLORENCE, Ala. – Shorter University erased an early 3-0 deficit to eliminate the Delta State University softball team from the Gulf South Conference Tournament with a 5-4 victory on Friday at the UNA Softball complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • DSU opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI single by Kaitlin Moore, scoring Kassidy Tally.
  • The Lady Statesmen added two more in the second, on a two-RBI double by Abi Gibson that scored Kara Lane Nowell and Carah Nunez. Kassidy Tally was thrown out at the plate on an excellent throwing combination by left fielder Tiffany Holland and third baseman Kameron Carter.
  • Shorter scored its first run of the contest in the third inning on an RBI double by Holland.
  • The Hawks added their second tally on another RBI double, this time by Ericka Bynum.
  • Shorter took the lead for good in the fifth on a three-run home run by Carter.
  • DSU strung together three straight hits with two outs in the seventh, but Pepper Baker struck out swinging to end the game with the tying run on third base.
  • Payton Lippert (17-10) picked up the victory, as she allowed one run on six hits in five innings. Starting pitcher Hannah Draper surrendered three runs on three hits in 1.2 innings. Kalei Kimbrell (8) pitched the final out to record the save.
  • Taylor Tucker (13-7) allowed five runs, four earned, on four hits in 4.1 innings. Taylor Johnson allowed just one hit in 2.2 innings of relief.
  • Jordan Jones and Nowell led DSU with two hits apiece.
 
STAT OF THE DAY:
  • The Lady Statesmen left nine runners stranded.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • DSU failed to earn a victory for just the second time this season (25-2) when it had outhit an opponent.
  • The Lady Statesmen fell to 28-6 when scoring the first run of a game and 22-6 when scoring in the first inning.
  • DSU fell to 10-7 in one run contests.
  • With a stolen base in the first inning, Tally now has 230 for her career.
