Swimming and Diving to Host Rhodes College

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University swimming and diving teams return to action on Friday, Sept. 22, for a meet with Rhodes College (Tenn.). The diving competition is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., while swimming is set for 7 p.m.
 
 
LAST TIME OUT:
  • Both teams opened the 2016-17 season at the University of Alabama. The Statesmen fell 211-83, while the Lady Statesmen were defeated 212-82.
 
ABOUT THE STATESMEN:
  • Matteo Fraschi claimed a pair of top-three finishes against Alabama. Fraschi came home in 55.59 in the 100-Breaststroke and 2:03.96, for a third place effort, in the 200-Breaststroke.
  • 2015-16 NSISC Men's Swimmer of the Year Mattia Schirru opened his sophomore campaign with a 21.16 to finish fifth in the 50-Freestyle, and a 46.72, to finish fourth in the 100.
  • William Ashwell (1-Meter) and Ryan Moore (3-Meter) led Statesmen divers with third place finishes in their respective events.
  • CollegeSwimming.com recently named Fraschi, Cody Lavoie, Alex Peach and Schirru Preseason All-Americans.
  • At Alabama, newcomers scored points for the Statesmen in nine different races.
 
 
ABOUT THE LADY STATESMEN:
  • The Lady Statesmen claimed multiple top-five finishes in events that held scoring participants by Alabama, including runner-up finishes by Caroline Jouisse and Anastasia Klyarovskaya.
  • Jouisse finished second in the 1000-Freestyle with a 10:23.79, and followed it up with a 5:04.93 for a runner-up finish in the 500.
  • Klyarovskaya's 57.11 in the 100-Backstroke was good enough for second place, as she finished just .25 behind the race winner.
  • Newcomer Casey Moore led DSU with a fifth place finish (191.10) in the 1-Meter diving competition. Hailey Leonard was sixth in the 3-Meter competition with a score of 199.80. 
  • Klyarovskaya, Kierstin Page, Kirsten Stroven and Melanie Tombers were recently named Preseason All-Americans by CollegeSwimming.com
  • Newcomers scored points for the Lady Statesmen in 10 different races.
 
SERIES NOTE:
  • The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen competed against Rhodes College on Sept. 18, 2015. The Statesmen earned a 197-34 win, while the Lady Statesmen claimed a 170-63 victory.
