Lady Statesmen Host CBU and Union for GSC Contests

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State women's soccer team will seek its first Gulf South Conference win when it hosts Christian Brothers University on Friday, Sept. 23, and Union University on Sunday, Sept. 25 at Delta Field. Free pizza will be provided by Cleveland Domino's, and the first 100 fans will receive a free pair of sunglasses during Friday's game. 
 
INSIDE THE SERIES: 
  • CBU leads the series 2-11-1.
  • The Lady Statesmen lost 3-0 to CBU last season. They Lady Bucs have not lost to the Lady Statesmen since 2008, when the Lady Statesmen recorded a 1-0 win at home.
  • Union leads the series 3-6.
  • In the last meeting between the two teams, Union defeated Delta State 4-0.
 
ABOUT DSU:  
  • The Lady Statesmen are currently 4-2 on the season—the best start in program history.
  • Delta State's scoring offense ranks sixth in the nation and first in the Gulf South Conference. The Lady Statesmen lead the league and are ranked sixth in the nation in assists per game averaging 3.83. Delta State is ranked No. 4 in the nation in points per game and first in the GSC in points per game with 12.50.
  • The Lady Statesmen's 26 goals on the season rank first in the GSC and third nationally.
  • They enter Friday's match coming off a 3-1 loss against in-state GSC rival Mississippi College that snapped a three-game winning streak.
  • Catherine Thomson scored the lone goal for Delta State at Mississippi College. Thomson leads the Lady Statesmen offense with five goals and 13 points. She ranks first in the GSC in points and 15th in the nation. She also ranks second in goals scored in the GSC. Thomson tied the school record for most goals scored in a game when she scored a hat trick against Alcorn State earlier this season.
  • Emily Oldacre made a season high of 13 saves against Mississippi College—just two shy of tying the fourth place record for most saves in a game. Oldacre also tied the fourth place records for most wins and shutouts in a season. She ranks third in the GSC in shutouts.
  • Rebecca Deegan holds the first place record for most penalty kicks made in a season and career after scoring the game-winning goal on a penalty kick against AUM.
  • Anoucke Baas and Katie Swaine hold the second place record for most assists in a season with four apiece. Swaine and Baas rank second and third respectively in the GSC in most assists per game.
  • The Lady Statesmen tied the record for most goals in a game with an 11-1 victory over Alcorn State on Sept. 13.
  • Thomson leads the team in goals with five, followed by Swaine (four), Tabitha Hayden (three), Sam Naughton (three), Ali Sullivan (three), Taylor Guess (two), Deegan (two), Traci Monroe (one), Zoe Scruggs (one), Taylor Schofield (one) and Baas (one).
 
ABOUT CHRISTIAN BROTHERS:
  • The Lady Bucs are 1-5 and 1-1 in GSC play.
  • In six games, the Lady Bucs have only found the back of the net three times. They rank fourth in the GSC in most goals allowed, conceding 10.
  • The Lady Bucs are averaging 9.8 shots and two assits per game.
  • Laruen Magdefau, Crissy Cornacchia, and Ashton White lead the Lady Bucs' offense. Magdefau has one goal, four shots, two shots on goal and two points. Cornacchia has three shots, one shot on goal, two points and one goal on the season thus far. White has two points, one shot, one shot on goal and one goal.    
  • In goal, Emily Wragg ranks third in the GSC in saves per game averaging six.   
 
ABOUT UNION:
  • The Lady Bulldogs are 1-3-1 and 1-1 in the GSC.
  • The Lady Bulldogs are averaging 10.6 shots per game and 0.80 goals per game.
  • Sarah Hershbain leads the Lady Bulldog offense with two goals, four points, 13 shots, and nine shots on goal. She ranks ninth in the GSC in shots and shots per game.
  • Union is fifth in the league in saves with 30.
  • Union goalkeeper, Kristen Francis rounds out the top five in the GSC in saves with 29.
 
UP NEXT: The Lady Statesmen will travel to Huntsville, Ala., to take on the University of Alabama-Huntsville for another GSC matchup on Friday, Sept. 30. Kickoff will be at 5:00 p.m.
