CLEVELAND, Tennessee – The Delta State softball team's comeback effort fell short as the Lee University Lady Flames defeated the Lady Statesmen 8-6 to earn the sweep in the series finale on Feb. 26, 2017 at Cleveland, Tenn.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kory Watterson's two-run home run to left field gave Delta State a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
- The Lady Flames made a comeback in the bottom of the first scoring six runs on two hits. Stevie Baird scored Lee's first run of the game on a muffed throw. Bailey Church's RBI single tied the game 2-2. Then, Abby McKinney drew a bases loaded walk to put the Lady Flames up 3-2. Taylor Moran scored the fourth run of the inning on a fielder's choice. The Lady Flames scored the fifth run of the inning on a bases loaded walk. Kayla Louie grounded out scoring McKinney for the final run of the inning.
- In the bottom of the second, McKinney's RBI single extended Lee's lead 7-2.
- In the top of the third, Madison Zoeller singled up the middle, scoring Mari Alex Sandridge and Jordan Jones, cutting Lee's lead to three runs, 7-4.
- Courtney Crawford singled up the middle, scoring Louie for the Lady Flames' eighth run of the game.
- In the top of the fourth, Kara Lane Nowell scored DSU's fifth run on a sac fly by Abi Gibson. Jordan Jones doubled down the left field line scoring Olivia Dick, and Delta State pulled the game within two runs.
- The Lady Statesmen had runners at the corners in the top of the seventh with only one out, but a strikeout and ground out ended the game.
- Starting pitcher Brittany Taylor (1-1) suffered the loss. In 2.2 innings of work, Taylor gave up eight runs, five earned, on six hits. In 3.1 innings of relief, Sandridge faced 14 batters, but allowed only three hits.
- Leigh Beatenbough (6-3) earned the win. In four innings, she allowed six runs, all earned, on nine hits, and struck out four. Moran earned the save, sacrificing only one hit in three innings.
- McKinney went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and scored a run, while Brooklynn Frazier went 2-for-3 and scored two runs to lead the Lady Flames' offense.
- At the plate for Delta State, Jones and Watterson were both 2-for-4. They combined for half of Delta State's RBIs.
STAT OF THE DAY
- Delta State tallied 10 hits, while Lee tallied nine.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Watterson recorded her second home run of the season and is tied with Sandridge for the team lead in homers.
- Watterson and Zoeller collected their second multi-RBI games of the season.
- Jones tallied her eighth double of the season. She leads the Lady Statesmen in doubles and ranks second in the GSC.
- Sandridge has reached base safely in the past seven contests.
- Delta State is 7-2 when scoring the first run of the game and 2-4 in two-run games.
- Delta State's six runs tied the fourth most in a single game this season.
- The Lady Statesmen have tallied 20 doubles, which ranks eighth in the GSC.
