Lady Statesmen Rally Back to Defeat Wolves 6-5 in Series Finale

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – After being down a run in the first inning, the Delta State softball team rallied back to defeat the Wolves, 6-5, in the series finale to avoid the three-game sweep at University Field on March 13, 2017.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wolves took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Raven Smith flied out to right field, scoring Marley Stowers for the Wolves' first run of the game.
The Lady Statesmen responded in the bottom of the second with an RBI double by Madison Zoeller that scored Carah Nunez to tie the game, 1-1. With bases loaded, Olivia Dick singled, scoring Zoeller, and Delta State took a 2-1 lead. Jordan Jones drew a bases loaded walk to put the Lady Statesmen up 3-1. Mari Alex Sandridge followed with a two-RBI double to put the Lady Statesmen up, 5-1.
In the bottom of the third, Zoeller's bomb to left field put the Lady Statesmen up 6-1.
However, Smith followed with a solo shot to right center in the top of the fourth to cut Delta State's lead, 6-2.
Taylor Johnson made quick work of the Wolves in the circle for the Lady Statesmen, but ran into some trouble in the top of the seventh when the Wolves began to claw back.
In the top of the seventh, Stallworth singled through the right side to plate UWG's third run. Molly Urhman was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Kilandra Dollar. Dollar singled up the middle, scoring Summer Wallace for the Wolves' fourth run. Stallworth scored on a sac fly by Katie Spinks, and the Wolves pulled within one run. But Stowers popped up to end the game, and the Lady Statesmen held on to the win, 6-5.    
Johnson earned the win (2-4), giving up five runs, all earned, on five hits.
The Wolves went through two pitchers, but starting pitcher Danielle Easterly suffered the loss, giving up six runs, all earned, on six hits. Zoie LaVergne tossed 3.2 innings of relief, sacrificing only three hits.
At the plate, Raven Smith led the Wolves going 1-for-1 with two RBIs and scoring two runs.
Zoeller, Watterson, and Dick led the Lady Statesmen offense combining for six of Delta State's nine hits and three of six RBIs.
 
STAT OF THE DAY
The three runs in the top of seventh inning were the most the Lady Statesmen have allowed in the final inning of play.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
Delta State improves to 4-1 in one-run games.
After today's game, West Georgia falls to seventh in Gulf South Conference standings, while the Lady Statesmen are 10th.
Zoeller's home run was her first of the season, and the eighth of her career.
The Lady Statesmen homered in every game of the series.
West Georgia scored in the first inning in all three games.
Sandridge has reached base safely in the past 19 contests. Her 2 RBI double was her second multi-RBI game of the season.
Abi Gibson finished the series riding a seven game hitting streak. Her longest hitting streak of the season is 11. Nunez is riding a five-game hitting, her longest of the season.
 
 
UP NEXT
DSU will travel to Huntsville, Ala., for a three-game GSC series against No. 14, the University of Alabama in Huntsville. The Lady Statesmen will square off with the Chargers in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 18 at 1 p.m. and will conclude the series with a single game on Sunday, March 19 at 1 p.m.
