Lady Statesmen Win Finale in Walk-Off Fashion to Sweep VSU

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – The Delta State softball team rallied back from a five-run deficit to win game three, 8-7, in walk-off fashion against Valdosta State University on Monday, April 24, and earn its first three-game sweep over the Blazers in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game remained scoreless until the top of the second when the Blazers took a five-run lead over the Lady Statesmen. The rally started with a lead-off double by Tana McDaniel. She then advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on an RBI single by Lacey Crandall. With bases loaded, Chelsea Canara singled to center field, scoring Haley Garrett for the Blazers' second run of the game, and Caylee Hancock scored the third run on an error. Jessica Mohl scored the fourth run of the inning on a fielder's choice, and Canara scored the fifth and final run on an error.
  • In the bottom of the second, Colben Patin smashed a two-out, three-run home run to left field to put Delta State back in the game.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Patin singled to left field, scoring Hannah Salmon, and the Lady Statesmen pulled the game within one-run, 5-4.
  • Carah Nunez tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single that scored Jordan Jones for Delta State's fifth run.
  • With the score still tied 5-5 after seven innings of play, the game proceeded to extra innings.
  • The game remained tied until the top of the 10th when the Blazers found the breakthrough. McDaniel blasted a two-run home run to give VSU a 7-5 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.
  • Jordan Jones singled to center field in the bottom of the 10th, scoring Olivia Dick. With the score now 7-6, Zoeller smashed a two-out single to left field, scoring Jones, and the Lady Statesmen tied the game, 7-7. Carlie Vice doubled, and Zoeller scored the final run of the game on an error, allowing the Lady Statesmen to win 8-7 in walk-off fashion.
  • Taylor Johnson earned the win in relief for the Lady Statesmen to improve (4-4). In 8.2 innings, Johnson gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits. Starting pitcher Bailie Springfield earned a no decision. In 1.1 innings of work, Springfield gave up five runs, three earned, on three hits.
  • Avery Lamb (13-7) suffered the loss for the Blazers. She gave up eight runs, six earned, on 12 hits, and struck out four.
  • The Lady Statesmen tallied 12 hits, while the Blazers recorded eight.
 
STAT OF THE DAY
  • With today's win, Delta State earned its first three-game sweep over Valdosta State, since modern records have been kept.
 
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • The Lady Statesmen recorded their third GSC series sweep of the season.
  • Vice has reached base safely in the past eight games—her longest on base streak of the season.
  • Patin's home run was her first as a Lady Statesman. She also recorded her second multi-RBI game.
  • Jones, Zoeller, Patin and Vice each recorded multi-hit games.
  • Jones recorded her 14th double of the season and is tied for second in the GSC for most doubles this season. 
  • Delta State recorded a season-high 40 at bats against Valdosta State.
  • The Lady Statesmen tied their season high in putouts with 30.
  • DSU's three doubles tied the second most in a single game this season.
  • Delta State improves to 17-2 when out-hitting opponents and 9-5 when hitting a home run.
  • The eight runs are the most Delta State has scored against Valdosta State in head coach Casey Bourgoyne-Charles' tenure.
  • The eight runs the Blazers sacrificed are the fourth most they have given up all season.  
  • After today's win, the Lady Statesmen are one game out of an eighth place berth to the GSC championship.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Lady Statesmen will travel to Clinton, Miss., for their final GSC road series of the regular season. Delta State will take on in-state rival, Mississippi College, for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 29, at 4 p.m. and concluding with a single game on Sunday, April 30, at 2 p.m.
