Three Second Half Goals Not Enough For Lady Statesmen

DALLAS – After scoring three unanswered goals in the second half to tie the game, the Delta State University women's soccer team allowed two goals in the late stages to drop its season opener 5-3 to Texas A&M International on Thursday at the Richardson College Soccer Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After Delta State had a potential fifth minute goal called back for offside, Texas A&M International opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a goal by Cio Bargallo.
  • Just three minutes later, an own goal doubled the Dustdevils.
  • Bargallo gave the Dustdevils a 3-0 lead in the 42nd minute, as she scored off an assist from Castro.
  • The Lady Statesmen stormed back in the second half, grabbing three goals in less than 11 minutes.
  • Jasmine McGill scored her first collegiate goal in the 49th minute, off an assist from Alycia Schwartz.
  • Less than two minutes later, Abigail Smith got the Lady Statesmen to within 3-2 when she drove home a loose ball in the box after a corner.
  • DSU tied the game at three in the 60th minute on a goal by Traci Monroe, who scored off an assist from Shyanne Montgomery.
  • Bargallo scored the match winner just 25 seconds later, and added her forth tally of the day in the 82nd minute.
  • Ana Branch saw a total of 19 shots, and collected seven saves.
  • The Lady Statesmen were outshot 19-13.
 
STAT OF THE GAME:
  • The teams combined for five goals during an 18 minute span (41-59).

BEYOND THE NUMBERS:
  • The Lady Statesmen fall to 5-9 all time in season openers.  
  • Smith's goal was the first of her career.
  • Schwartz and Montgomery both recorded their first career assist.
