CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Delta State University women's soccer team continues its Gulf South Conference road trip when it travels to face Valdosta State University on Friday, Sept. 22, before wrapping up the weekend at No. 5 West Florida on Sunday, Sept. 24.
INSIDE THE SERIES:
- VSU leads the all-time series 5-0-1.
- In the 2016 meeting between the two sides, VSU scored a 67th minute goal to defeat the Lady Statesmen 1-0.
- West Florida leads the all-time series 12-0.
- Last season, UWF scored three goals in the first half and added one in the second in a 4-0 victory.
ABOUT DSU:
- After defeating Shorter on the road for their first victory of the season, the Lady Statesmen enter play 1-5 with a 1-3 mark in GSC action.
- Jasmine McGill was named Freshman of the Week after scoring three goals in two games last week, including both goals in the 2-1 win over Shorter and a last minute strike against Lee. McGill became the first DSU player to be named Freshman of the Week since Lakyn Cryder in 2014.
- McGill is tied for second in the GSC with four goals, while her 15 shots are tied for sixth.
- The Lady Statesmen have made the third most saves in the GSC (28).
- Goalkeeper Ana Branch is tied for fifth in the league with 4.75 saves per game.
ABOUT VALDOSTA STATE:
- Valdosta State enters play 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the GSC.
- A pair of Lady Blazers are tops in the league in offensive categories. Taylor Snell leads the league with 12 points, and is tied for the GSC lead with five goals, while Mallory McDaniel leads the league with five assists.
- The Lady Blazers have outscored opponents 12-3 in the second half.
- VSU ranks second in the league, scoring 3.2 goals per game.
- Caroline Embler ranks third in the league with a 1.03 goals against average.
ABOUT WEST FLORIDA:
- West Florida enters play ranked No. 5 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Association Top 25 Poll.
- The Argonauts lead the GSC in goals (19), goals against (3), shots (116) and corner kicks (56).
- Deneisha Blackwood is tied for second in the league with four goals, while Leonie Kreil is tied for second with four assists.
- UWF has scored at least three goals in all five of its games, and is outscoring opponents 11-1 in the second half.
- Goalkeeper Katelyn Burkhart ranks second in the GSC with a .630 goals against average.
