Lady Statesmen Open GSC Play at Home Versus UAH, UWA

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Delta State University women's soccer team is scheduled to officially open its home and Gulf South Conference slates when it faces Alabama Huntsville on Friday, Sept. 8 at 2 p.m., before finishing the weekend with a 2 p.m. contest against the University of West Alabama on Sunday, Sept. 10.

INSIDE THE SERIES:
  • UAH leads the series 12-2.
  • Both DSU wins in the series came on the road. 
  • UAH scored a pair of second half goals in a 3-1 win last season.
  • UWA leads the series 7-1.
  • West Alabama scored two goals in each half in a 4-0 victory last year.
 
ABOUT DSU:
  • The Lady Statesmen enter play 0-2, after dropping a pair of neutral site contests to Heartland Conference foes Texas A&M International and St. Mary's.
  • Three different players have scored for DSU this season. Traci Monroe scored her second career goal, while senior Abigail Smith and freshman Jasmine McGill recorded their first goals at DSU.
  • McGill leads the Lady Statesmen with seven shots, while Monroe and Smith have two apiece.
  • Ana Branch, had seven saves in the loss to Texas A&M International, while Ella Hunkin stepped in and had six stops.
 
ABOUT UAH:
  • The Chargers enter play 1-1, including a 1-0 home setback in the opener to McKendree and a 3-1 victory over Tusculum.
  • UAH is 1-4 in its last five GSC openers.
  • Three different players have scored for the Chargers.
  • UAH keeper Megan Buford has made 13 stops in two games.
 
ABOUT UWA:
  • UWA also enters the weekend 1-1 as it suffered a 3-0 home loss to Tusculum, before bouncing back with a 1-0 win over St. Leo. The Tigers are scheduled to face Mississippi College on Friday Sept. 8.
  • Anele Komani was named GSC Freshman of the week after scoring the winner against St. Leo.
  • Marie Dreezen leads the Tigers with five shots.
  • Jenni Aarniva has started in goal for both UWA games, and has 13 saves.
 
UP NEXT: The Lady Statesmen are scheduled to face their first GSC road tests when they visit Lee on Friday, Sept. 15, before finishing the weekend at Shorter on Sunday, Sept. 17.
