Lady Statesmen Earn Victory Over Conference Champions Lindenwood at Dual Meet

ST. PETERS, Missouri – The Delta State University women's swimming and diving team split its dual meet on Saturday, defeating Lindenwood but falling to No. 2 Drury. DSU captured several individual events with Lucia Martelli and Celina Batsel leading the way for the Green and White.

How it happened:
  • The Lady Statesmen 200 yard medley team opened the meet with a win with a time of 1:45:53.
  • Caroline Jouisse took second in the 1000 yard freestyle doing so in 10:32:06
  • Celina Batsel won the 200 yard freestyle in 1:54:59 with Celeste Turner taking second.
  • Freshman Madison Lavoie took second in the 400 yard IM.
  • Lucia Martelli took second in the 100 yard butterfly swimming the race in 57:26 and then won the 100 yard backstroke three events later in 56:78.
  • Gillian Pratt took second in the women's three meter diving.
Notables:
  • Celina Batsel had her best time in the 200 yard freestyle this season.
  • Martelli won the 100 yard backstroke for the first time this season.
  • The Lady Statesmen defeated last season's 2018 NSISC Champions during this competition, Lindenwood Lions. This marks the second time in four years during the October road trip to Missouri, last time was a 123 – 120 victory during 2016.
  • The final score versus the current second ranked Drury women, was the closest in school history.
  • The 200 medley relay grouping of Byrd (Backstroke), Lavoie (Breaststroke),  Martelli (Butterfly), and Batsel (Freestyle) improved on their nation leading time with a 1:45.53.  They continue to be the top medley relay time in the country for NCAA Division 2.  The relay finished over 2 full seconds ahead of the entire field against Lindenwood and Drury.
           

A Look Ahead:
  • The Lady Statesmen return to action Friday,  November 2 when they head to Arkadelphia to take on Henderson State.
