Big Second Half Paces Valdosta State Past Statesmen

VALDOSTA, Ga. – After seeing the game tied at 28 going into halftime, No. 10 Valdosta State (6-0, 4-0 GSC) scored 31 second half points to earn a 59-28 win over the Delta State University football team (0-6, 0-4 GSC), on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A 48-yard pass set up a Jamar Thompkins two-yard run to put Valdosta State up 7-0 on its opening drive of the game.
  • Delta State scored the next 14-points to take a 14-7 lead, as Patrick Shegog scored on a two-yard run with 10:09 to go, and then tossed a four-yard scoring strike to Benji Galbraith with 5:04 remaining in the first quarter. 
  • Rogan Wells' 11-yard run tied the game the game 14-14 at the 3:15 mark of the first quarter.
  • The teams kept trading punches in the second quarter. Trey Roberson shed several would be VSU tacklers on the way for a 25-yard touchdown run to put the Statesmen back front 21-14 with to open the quarter.
  • Brian Saunds hauled in a 25-yard touchdown grab from Wells to tie the game, 21-21 with 9:27 left in the second.
  • A one-yard run by Kelon Wilson capped a 13-play, 72-yard drive to help the Statesmen claim a 28-21 advantage with 3:01 to go in the first half.
  • VSU used five plays to cover 70 yards on its ensuing possession to knot the score at 28 with 1:46 left before halftime.
  • Wells threw a nine-yard touchdown to Stewart Spence followed by a 27-yard field goal from Andrew Gray to take a 38—28 lead with 6:03 left in the third quarter.
  • Wells fired a 28-yard touchdown strike to Seth McGill on the final play of the third quarter to push the lead to 45-28.
  • The fourth quarter scoring saw Wells toss a 37-yard touchdown to Lio'undre Gallimore while reserve quarterback Ivory Durham ended the scoring with a five-yard pass to Darrel Myers with 4:23 remaining.
OFFENSIVE NOTEABLES:
  • The Statesmen finished with a season-high 423-yards of offense, and their 208 yards rushing was the second most this season.
  • Wilson led the Statesmen rushing with a season-high 95 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown.
  • Trey Roberson added 56 yards on 12 totes and a touchdown.
  • Shegog completed 17-of-23 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 30 yards and a touchdown.
  • Galbraith had a career-high four receptions for 29 yards with a touchdown, and Jakaylen Jackson had four catches 16 yards.
  • Wells completed 18-of-32 passes for 364 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Blazers, who had 547 yards of offense.
DEFENSIVE NOTEABLES: SPECIAL TEAMS NOTEABLES:
  • Delta State's Cody Mills added to his GSC-leading punting statistics in the loss to VSU with five punts for 228 yards for a 45.6 average on the day.  
  • Mills added a 55-yard punt that was his seventh to traveled 55 yards, or longer, this season. 
  • Taylor Crabtree was 4-for-4 on PAT's.
  • Trey Roberson had four kickoff returns for 83 yards with a long of 26.  
OTHER NOTEABLES:
  • Delta State is 0-6 for the first time since 1997.
  • This is the third of five nationally ranked opponents on the 2018 schedule for the Statesmen.
  • The Statesmen lead the series 20-17-1 and has lost four-straight in the series dating back to a 49-34 win in Valdosta, Ga., in 2014.
