Johnson, Lady Statesmen Blank No. 20 Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. -- Senior pitcher Taylor Johnson allowed just two hits and tossed a complete game, as the Delta State University softball team defeated No. 20 Valdosta State 2-0, in Gulf South Conference action, on Sunday at Steel's Diamond.

FINAL SCORE: DELTA STATE 2 (9-9, 3-3 GSC) - No. 20 Valdosta State 0 (14-4, 4-2)
 
GAME CHANGER:
- After allowing a hit in the first and third innings, Johnson did not surrender a hit during the rest of the contest.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lady Statesmen finished the game with six hits.
- Marissa Landrum (2-for-3) was the only DSU player with multiple hits. 
- Kelly Byrd had a home run, which was the only extra base hit for the Lady Statesmen.
- With the win, Johnson moved to 5-3 this season.

KEY PLAYS:
- In the fifth inning, DSU scored what proved to be the game-winning run on Kailyn Lofton scored on a Mallory Myers single to left center.
- Byrd gave the Lady Statesmen a 2-0 lead in the sixth when she sent a Kassie Johnson's pitch over the right field fence.
- The Blazers had runners reach via error in the fifth and seventh innings, but were unable to capitalize.
 
NOTEWORTHY:
- Johnson has not allowed an earned run in her last 22 innings, also opponents have recorded just 13 hits during that same span.
- Byrd now has four home runs this season. Of her 14 hits, 10 are for extra bases.
- DSU is now 4-2 in its last six meetings with Valdosta State.

- The Lady Statesmen are scheduled to begin their 2018 home slate on Saturday, March 3 when they open a three-game series against new GSC member Auburn Montgomery. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
