UNA Uses Clutch Hits to Sweep Lady Statesmen

FLORENCE, Ala. -- No. 4 North Alabama got a walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh in game one, and got a three spot in the fourth inning of game two in a doubleheader sweep of the Delta State University softball team, on Saturday, at the UNA Softball Complex. The Lions took the opener 4-3 and the nightcap 4-1.

GAME 1: No. 4 North Alabama 4 (39-4, 26-2 GSC), DSU 3 (25-20, 16-13 GSC)
 
GAME CHANGER:
- With the game tied at three in the bottom of the seventh, Katie Eakes delivered a pinch-hit single, with two outs, to win the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lions out hit the Lady Statesmen 11-6
- Jordan Jones (2-for-4) had a pair of hits to lead DSU.
- Four other Lady Statesmen recorded one hit.
- UNA finished with three extra-base hits.
- Nicole Fullilove (9-4) allowed four runs on 11 scattered hits, with two strikeouts and three walks.
- The Lady Statesmen left five runners on base.

KEY PLAYS:
- In the opening frame, Kelly Byrd gave the Lady Statesmen a 1-0 lead on an RBI single that scored Jones.
- UNA answered with a three-run home run by Hannah Shollenberger.
- The Lady Statesmen tied it at three in the second on RBI singles by Mallory Myers and Jones.
- DSU failed to record a hit in the last four innings.
- After UNA got the winning run to third, Fullilove forced a line out to left but Eakes stepped up next to deliver the game-winner.

NOTEWORTHY:
- The opening run by the Lady Statesmen stopped a streak of shutouts in five straight contests for UNA.
- Fullilove has lost just twice in her last seven starts.
- Jones now ranks second on the team with 10 multi-hit games.

GAME CHANGER:
- UNA used a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly to score three runs in the fourth inning.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- DSU finished with a 7-6 advantage in hits.
- Byrd, Abi Gibson and Myers all lead DSU with two hits apiece.
- Taylor Johnson (10-10) surrendered four runs, two earned, on five hits in 3.1 innings.
- Mari Alex Sandridge allowed just one hit in 2.2 innings of relief.
- The Lady Statesmen left 10 runners on base.

KEY PLAYS:
- UNA took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a double steal attempt that led to a throwing error.
- DSU tied the game in the third on an RBI single by Byrd.
- The Lions scored all of the runs they needed in the fourth on two singles and a sacrifice fly.
- DSU left runners on base in all but one inning, including three in the sixth.

NOTEWORTHY:
- UNA starting pitcher Megan Garst allowed her first earned run in 37 innings.
- The seven hits are the most allowed by UNA in its last 15 games.
- Byrd has reached base safely in 25 straight games.
- UNA had not been outhit in the last 15 contests.

- The Lady Statesmen are scheduled to close out the regular season when they host in-state rival Mississippi College for a three-game GSC series. The series is set to begin with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 18 at 4 p.m.
