CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State University Swimming & Diving is gearing up for "Senior Day," as the No. 5 ranked Statesmen and No. 14 ranked Lady Statesmen welcome Henderson State to the Aquatics Center on Friday, Jan. 11. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
Prior to the meet starting, the festivities will begin with senior day at 1:40 p.m. This season the Lady Statesmen will be honoring three seniors; and the Statesmen will honor 14 seniors.
This is the first meet back for the swim and dive teams in the new year. For the second straight year the Delta State University Men's Swim and Dive teams won the annual Christmas Invitational at the DSU Aquatics Center. The Lady Statesmen claimed second place in the meet. It was a meet for several veterans earning wins along with freshman claiming several victories.
Giulio Brugnoni continued to swim well as he broke the school record, the pool record, and qualified for nationals in the 100-yard backstroke in 46:39.
Freshman,
Madison Lavoie won her second race of the meet. She swam 2:18:66 in the 200-yard breaststroke. She also set another record for DSU in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03:02. That time is a Division II invited time for postseason. She also finished a second and a half faster than anyone else.
Gabriel Miranda,
Mattia Schirru, Michael Maley and
Matey Rezashki grabbed first place with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 6:37.68 in the men's 800-free relay. The Statesmen also finished the meet with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:58:09. The Statesmen won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:20:82 which is a Division B Standard time for NCAA postseason qualifications.
The Lady Statesmen finished 1-2-3 in the 1000-free.
Sierra Rhodes finished first with a 10:18.22 followed by
Peyton Osborn with a 10:19.29 and
Victoria Brady with a 10:27.30,
Finally, Kyle Wessner qualified for the NCAA nationals with his 3-meter diving score of 537.75.
This is the final home meet of the regular season for the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen. On Saturday they will travel to Baton Rogue, La. to take on two NCAA Division 1 opponents. The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen will face LSU and the Incarnate Word Saturday afternoon.
