Historic Season for Lady Statesmen Comes to an End in the Gulf South Conference Tournament

CLINTON, Miss.- The Delta State University women's soccer team fell to Mississippi College in the first round of the Gulf South Conference on Tuesday afternoon by a final score of 3-1. Mississippi scored one goal in the first half and two in the second half for their three goals while Erin Longsden scored the lone goal for the Lady Statesmen. It was the first time in school history for the Lady Statesmen to qualify and compete in the GSC tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mississippi College moved quickly with a shot and a score in the third minute when Lexi Pund crossed one to Kaylee Foster who slotted it in the back of the net.
  • MC continued the pressure and had three more shots before Casey LaFontaine took Delta State's first one in the 20th minute.
  • In the 42nd and 43rd minute MC dialed up the pressure even more but Amanda Hilliard had three saves in those two minutes.
  • In the 61st minute, Cat Buckley had a great shot for DSU but the MC goal keeper turned it away.
  • After a foul on DSU, the Lady Choctaws played it quickly and Emma Claire Furman got a breakaway goal to make it 2-0.
  • Katie Taylor scored the third and final goal for Mississippi College in the 77th minute.
  • Delta State answered back in the 78th minute when Erin Longsden took Jennifer Lopez's cross and hit it off the post for DSU's lone goal.

  • This season the Lady Statesmen only gave up 17 goals which is the fewest in a single season in school history. The previous record was 30 which was set in 2011.
  • DSU scored 12 goals this season which was the third fewest in school history. The fewest was six in 2005 and eight in 2009.
  • Amanda Hilliard has tied the school record of ten clean sheets tying Sarah Prevost who played in 2007-2008.
