Miscues Cost Statesmen In Loss To Choctaws

CLINTON, Miss. – Detric Hawthorn accounted for three touchdowns and Mississippi College (5-5, 4-4 GSC) got two defensive scores to upend the Delta State University football team (6-5, 5-3 GSC) 37-13 on Saturday at Robinson Hale Stadium.
 
Taylor Crabtree kicked field goals of 32 and 24 yards in the first half and Breck Ruddick had a six-yard rushing touchdown to account for the Statesmen scores on the afternoon.

Junior Faulk had fourth quarter interception to set a Delta State single season record with nine, breking the old mark of eight was held by Garrett Williams (2010) and Monterio James (2005).

Ruddick rushed nine times for 24 yards and 22-of-29 passing for 145 yards to move his career total offensive yards to 4,077. The Marion, Ark., native joins Josh Bright (4,017 | 1998-2001), as the only quarterbacks in DSU history with over 4,000 yards of total offense.  

Detric Hawthorn rushed for two scores and passed for another and the MC defense had a pick-six and a scoop and score in each half.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Mississippi College took the opening kickoff and drove 64 yards in nine plays to take a 6-0 lead on a Detric Hawthorn scored on a one-yard run. The extra-point missed wide right to keep the score 6-0 with 10:11 left in the first quarter.
  • Crabtree connected on a 32-yard field to cut the MC lead to 6-3 with 3:47 to play in the opening quarter.
  • Bailey McGaha-Potter kicked a 26-yard field goal to start the second quarter scoring and stretch the lead to 9-3 with 11:37 to go.
  • Crabtree drew the Statesmen to within 9-6 making a 24-yard field goal with five minutes to go before halftime.
  • A Hawthorn tossed a 13-yard scoring strike to Moregan Sharpe gave MC a 16-6 lead with 35 seconds left in the second quarter.
  • Tuner Rotenberry intercepted a Breck Ruddick pass and returned it 33 yards to give the Choctaws a 23-6 lead at halftime.
  • Hawthorn plunged in for a one-yard touchdown to stake MC to a 30-6 lead with 5:10 left in the third quarter.
  • Derric Hawthorn picked up a DSU fumble at MC3 and raced 97 yards for MC's second defensive score and a 37-6 lead with 35 seconds to go in the third quarter.
  •  Ruddick scored on a six-yard run to cut the deficit to 37-13 with 9:31 left in the fourth quarter.
 
OFFENSIVE NOTEABLES:
  • Breck Ruddick rushed nine times for 24 yards and 25-of-32 passing for 159 yards to move his career total offensive yards to 4,077. The Marion, Ark., native joins Josh Bright (4,017 | 1998-2001), as the only quarterbacks more than 4,000 yards total offense.  
  • The Statesmen finished with 31 offensive yards, 105 rushing and 207 passing on the afternoon.
  • Tony Daggett caught six passes for 91 yards and LJ Hawkins and Leon Green had five receptions apiece.
  • Kelon Wilson rushed 14 times for 52 yards to lead the Statesmen on the ground.
 
DEFENSIVE NOTEABLES:
  • Junior Faulk's fourth quarter interception was his Delta State season record and GSC leading ninth of the season. The old mark of eight was held by Garrett Williams (2010) and Monterio James (2005).
  • Vada King recorded eight tackles, seven solos, and leads the GSC with 84 tackles on the season.
  • Tim Irvin had seven stops, five solo stops, led the Statesmen on defense.
     
SPECIAL TEAMS NOTEABLES:
  • Senior kicker Taylor Crabtree's has made a GSC leading 15-of-19 field goals, connecting on field goal attempts from 32 and 24 yards.  
  • Sam Barge punted two times for 44-yard average on the afternoon.

  • The loss snaps Delta State's seven-game series winning streak while falling to 10-11-1 at Robinson-Hale Stadium in Clinton.
