ALLENDALE, Mich. – A 10-point fourth quarter lead slipped away from the Delta State University football team (1-1) as Grand Valley State scored 14 points in the final quarter to claim 28-24 win on Saturday at Lubbers Stadium.
The Statesmen held a 24-14 lead following a
Kelon Wilson 10-yard touchdown run with 9:52 remaining.
Grand Valley State cut the lead to 24-21 on a Cade Peterson two-yard run with 5:19 left before turning an interception into the go-head score on a Aryuan Cain-Veasey nine-yard run with 3:34 to play.
The Statesmen's final drive ended when
Jalen Browder was stopped for a four-yard loss on fourth down and 12 at the DSU 36 with 1:17 remaining.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After the Statesmen defense forced a turnover on downs inside DSU territory on Grand Valley's first drive, Patrick Shegog scored on a 40-yard run to cap a five-play, 71-yard drive to put the Statesmen up 7-0 with 9:32 showing on the first quarter clock.
- Taylor Crabtree made a 42-yard field to open the second quarter scoring and push the Statesmen lead to 10-0.
- The Lakers answered on their ensuing possession when Daevon Anderson hauled in a 74-yard pass from Cole Kotopka to cut the DSU lead to 10-7 with 9:16 remaining in the second quarter.
- Jakwon Lipscomb intercepted a Kotopka pass and raced 35 yards to stake the Statesmen to a 17-7 advantage with 6:53 left in the second quarter.
- A Rodrick Jarrett interception set up the Statesmen offense at the GVSU 30 but Wallace Hall blocked a Crabtree 34-yard field goal attempt to keep the DSU lead at 10 points.
- Crabtree missed a 38-yard field wide left with one second left to keep the Statesmen lead at 17-7 going into halftime.
- The Statesmen had a chance to add to the lead early the third quarter only to see a Crabtree 42-yard field goal sail wide right.
- Following the missed field goal attempt, Austin Paritee took a screen pass from Peterson and sprinted 74 yards for the touchdown to trim the deficit to 17-14 at the 9:19 mark of the third quarter.
- The Statesmen defense forced a three-and-out to begin the fourth quarter, taking over at the DSU 39 following a Laker punt.
- Delta State drove 61 yards in nine plays with Wilson scoring on a 10-yard run to give the Statesmen a 24-14 lead with 9:52 left in the final stanza.
- A Peterson two-yard run on fourth and goal cut the Green-and-White's lead to 24-21 with 5:19 to play in the fourth quarter.
- Following an interception, Caine-Veasey scored on a nine-yard run to give the Lakers a 28-24 lead with 3:34 left in the contest.
OFFENSIVE NOTEABLES:
- The Statesmen totaled 343 yards, 230 rushing and 113 through the air.
- Shegog completed 13-of-23 passes for 113 yards and rushed 17 times for 79 yards including a 40-yard touchdown scamper.
- Deion Dampier rushed 23 times for 109 yards to lead the Statesmen rushing attack.
- Freshman Todd Lee Battle caught a career-high four passes for 26 yards.
- Kotopka complete 6-of-13 passes for 157 yards with touchdown and two interceptions while Peterson finished 3-of-8 passes for 101 yards with one touchdown and an interception.
- Bryce Young-Walls rushed nine times for 54 yards for GVSU.
- The Lakers finished with 334 total yards, 76 rushing and 258 passing.
DEFENSIVE NOTEABLES:
- Lipscomb's interception return for a touchdown was the first INT return for a score since Darren Gardenhire's 74-yard pick-six against Shorter University on Oct. 25, 2018.
- The Statesmen intercepted three GVSU passes in the first half marking the first three interception game since picking off three passes against Mississippi College on Sept 29, 2016.
- Junior Falk intercepted his team leading third pass of the season in the second quarter while Lipscomb and Jarrett also notched interceptions.
- Vada King posted 13 tackles for the second straight week, with four solo stops, and 1.5 tackles for loss.
- Jalen Guy and Zane Samuel accounted for a sack apiece.
SPECIAL TEAMS NOTEABLES:
- Crabtree was 1-for-4 on field goals attempts making a 42-yard field goal in the second quarter.
- Sam Barge averaged 51.0 yards per punt on three punts with a long of 55 yards and one punt inside the GVSU 20.
NOTEABLES:
- The Statesmen won the coin toss and are 2-0 in coin tosses in 2019. Delta State deferred their choice to the second half for the second straight week.
