Statesmen Earn Midweek Win Over Misssissippi Valley State

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Delta State University baseball team scored three unanswered runs late in the game and got a solid start from Wesley Grantham to notch a 4-1 win over Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday afternoon at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Chad Ragland doubled and scored on a Blake Wolferding single to left field for an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Angel Maldonado walked and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at one in the fifth.
  • The Statesmen regained a 2-1 lead in the fifth frame. Bradley Sanford walked and later scored from third when Ragland reached on a fielding error.
  • Delta State added two runs in the eighth to build a 4-1 lead. Wolferding tripled to lead off the inning and Jake Barlow worked a one-out walk. Wolferding came in to score on a Darek Sargent sacrifice-fly to left field. Barlow advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an errant throw by the MVSU catcher on the play.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Wesley Grantham (1-0) picked up the win, tossing 3.0 scheduled innings, allowing no runs on no hits with three strikeouts.
  • The Statesmen used five pitchers in relief of Grantham. Payton Griffin, Kole Kittrell, Patrick Hodges and Tanner Propst combined to scatter two hits with eight strikeouts over the final six innings.
  • Propst (1) worked a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts to register his first save as a Statesmen.
 
NOTABLES:
  • After making his first relief appearance against UAH, Grantham's start was his first as a Statesmen.
  • Ragland went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base out of the leadoff spot.
  • Wolferding was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a triple while Sanford was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
  • Freshman Devin Fox made his first career start, tallying his first collegiate hit in the fifth inning.
