Dampier Runs Statesmen Past Shorter, 14-13

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Deion Damper's 91-yard run touchdown run in the fourth quarter combined with a smothering Delta State University (3-5, 2-4 GSC) defense helped the Statesmen claim a 14-13 win over Shorter University (2-7, 0-6 GSC) on Saturday afternoon at Parker Field-McCool Stadium.
 
Dampier finished the day with 155 yards on 15 carries and accounted for both Statesmen touchdowns while his counterpart, Rico Owens, rushed 18 times for 104 yards.
 
The Statesmen defense limited Shorter to 74 second half yards and 156 total yards for the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Shorter struck first when Trevon Hawkins returned a blocked punt and raced 10-yard into the end zone for a 7-0 lead with 8:30 to go in the first quarter.
  • John Dietl III caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Aeneas Dennis to give Shorter a 13-0 lead after Tim Williams blocked the extra point.
  • Delta State got on the board with 5:31 to go before the half when Deion Dampier scored on a 20-yard run to cut the deficit to 13-7.
  • Delta State had two scoring chances in the third quarter, missing field goal attempts from 21 and 25 yards out to keep the Hawks' lead at 13-7 moving to the final quarter.
  • The score remained 13-7 until the 7:16 mark of the fourth quarter when Dampier tight roped the sidelined and raced 91 yards to give the Statesmen a 14-13 lead.
OFFENSIVE NOTEABLES:
  • Dampier had 155 yards on the ground and Owens had 104 yards to become the first backfield tandem to rush for 100 yards in four years. Breck Ruddick had 164 yards and Chris Robinson had 144 against Bowie State in the NCAA DII Playoffs on Nov. 18, 2017.
  • Coke Kirk completed 17-of-30 passes for 117 yards under center.
  • The Statesmen finished with 317 yards of offense, 117 passing and 256 on the ground on the day.
  • Dohnte Meyers had four catches for 14 yards while Tyler Kennedy had three grabs for a team-high 32 yards.
  • Dampier's 91 yard run was the fourth longest run in DSU and GSC history.
DEFENSIVE NOTEABLES:
  • The Green-and-White defense limited the Hawks' offense to 74 yards in the second half, including 31 yards on the ground in the second half.
  • The Statesmen held the Hawks to 156 total yards on the afternoon while the GSC sack leaders tallied 4.5 sacks and eight overall tackles for the loss.
  • Tim Williams had one sack and two tackles for loss.
  • John Valesco led the Statesmen with nine tackles, including five solo stops and one tackle for loss.
  • Marvin Terry seven tackles that included three sacks and four tackles for loss
SPECIAL TEAMS NOTEABLES:
  • Parker Burleson punted seven times for 38.9 yards per punt with three pinned inside the SU 20 and one punt of 55 yards.
  • Connor Mantelli was 2-for-2 on PATs with his final PAT providing the 14-13 lead with 7:16 left in the final quarter.
  • The Statesmen blocked their GSC leading fifth kick of the season on special teams.
OTHER NOTEABLES:
  • Delta State has won eight straight against Shorter to lead the series 8-1 while improving to 4-0 at home in the series.
  • Dampier's two touchdowns marked the third straight game a Statesmen rushed for two touchdowns. Owens posted two scoring runs against North Greenville and West Alabama prior to SU.
