Statesmen Fall in Season Finale to No. 11 West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga.  -- Jace Jordan had three rushing touchdowns and Harrison Frost threw for a pair of scores to lead No. 11 the University of West Georgia to a 44-7 win over Delta State University on Saturday afternoon at Ra-Lin Field at University Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • West Georgia struck twice in the first quarter starting with a Jordan Jace 49-yard run for a 7-0 lead.
  • Harrison Frost found Phil Patterson for an 82-yard scoring strike with 5:46 remaining in the first quarter. Tim Williams, Jr., blocked Omar Cervantes ensuing PAT attempt to keep the UWG lead at 13-0.
  • Zane Samuel blocked a Cervantes 46-yard field goal attempt and Ty Woods returned the block 31 yards to start the second quarter and keep the deficit at 13.
  • Frost found Mechane Slade for a 13-yard touchdown to extend the advantage to 20-0 with 5:16 left in the second quarter.
  • Jace added his second score of the day taking a handoff 18-yards to the end zone to give UWA a 27-0 lead with 3:07 to go before halftime.
  • Rajaez Mosley got in on the UWG first-half scoring with a one-yard run to give UWG a 34-0 lead at halftime.
  • Jace dashed for another score, this one from 26 yards out, to start the third quarter scoring and give the Wolves a 41-0 lead.
  • Cervantes added a 28-yard field goal to give UWG a 44-0 lead at the 5:39 mark of the fourth quarter.
  • The Statesmen cracked the scoreboard on a Patrick Shegog 41-yard touchdown pass to Dohnte Meyers to trail 44-7 at the end of the third quarter.
OFFENSIVE NOTABLES:
  • Meyers hauled in a game-high nine passes for 113 yards and a touchdown.
  • Shegog complete 21-of-38 passes for 223 yards with a touchdown pass and three interceptions and rushed 10 times for 40 yards.
  • Tyler Kennedy had eight catches for 77 yards.
  • Cole Kirk was 6-for-11 for 51 yards in relief of Shegog.
  • Deion Dampier rushed eight times for 34 yards.
  • The Statesmen ran 63 plays for 303 yards, 228 passing and 75 rushing.
DEFENSIVE NOTABLES:
  • Marvin Terry led the Statesmen with seven tackles and two tackles for loss and finished the year with a team-high 21 tackles-for-loss.
  • Tamos Stevenson had six tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and a sack.
  • Sherrod Paige's first-quarter interception gave him a GSC-best five interceptions on the season.
  • Chris Sehring tallied four tackles and a sack.
SPECIAL TEAMS NOTABLES:
  • The Statesmen blocked three UWG kicks, one PAT, one field goal and a punt, to extend their GSC leading blocked kicks to eight (12th in NCAA).
  • Patrick Burleson averaged 42.0 yards on three punts, with two pinned inside the UWG 20.
  • Connor Mantelli made his lone PAT attempt on the afternoon.
  • Kory Gainwell returned six kickoffs for 122 yards with a long return of 38 yards.
OTHER NOTABLES:
  • The 113 receiving yards marked Meyers' second 100-plus receiving game of the season.
  • Meyers is the fourth Statesmen to post a 100-plus receiving yard game.
