ROME, Ga. -- The Delta State University baseball team (1-2, 1-2 GSC) claimed an 8-4 win in game one over Shorter University (2-1, 2-1 GSC), only to fall in the night cap 14-8 on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2021 at the Ledbetter Baseball Complex.
Game two was called in the bottom of the eighth inning due to darkness as Shorter gained a 14-8 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
- Kaleeq Brannigan hit a solo home run to stake Shorter to 1-0 lead in the bottom of first inning.
- Hayden White deposit a pitch over the left field wall in the top of the third to tie the game, 1-1.
- Brannigan homered in the fourth to put the Hawks back in front 2-1.
- The lead held up until the sixth when the Statesmen erupted for five runs to take a 5-2 lead. White walked and scored on a Kirkland Trahan single and Patrick Hodges belted a three-run home run to highlight the inning.
- Brannigan doubled home Jackob Woods in the seventh to trim the DSU lead to 5-3.
- Delta State pushed the lead to 6-3 in the eighth. Trahan reached on a fielder's choice and after advancing to second on a wild pitch, scored on a Kade Dees single to center.
- Two runs crossed the plate in the top of the ninth to build the lead to 8-3. Kevin Granger reached on an error and came home when White reached on a fielder's choice. Chad Ragland singled and scored on a Blayke Dendy sac-fly.
- Brannigan doubled home Woods in the bottom of the ninth to make the final scored 8-4.
ON THE MOUND (GM 1)
- Statesmen starter Christian Day (1-0) tossed 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts to earn the win.
- Taylor Boisclair (0-1) gave up five runs on six hits with five strikeouts as the pitcher of record for Shorter.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
- The Statesmen took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a Trahan two-run home run.
- Darek Sargent hit a two-run home run and Trahan followed with a three-run home run in the second inning to push the Statesmen lead to 7-0.
- Luis Acevado hit a solo home run in the second to trim the deficit to 7-1.
- Shorter used a six-run third to tie the game at seven. Nathan Buttersworth doubles in two runs and Acevado hit a grand slam to right field to tie the game.
- Shorter took a 9-7 lead in the fourth and added five in the fifth to take a 14-7 lead. Cory Mason delivered an RBI double and another run came home on a throwing error in the fourth. Bailey Gerstner highlighted the fifth with a three-run home run.
- Ragland singled home Dees to cut the Shorter lead to 14-8 in the eighth.
- The game was called by the umpires in the bottom of the eighth due to darkness and no lights at the Ledbetter Baseball Complex.
ON THE MOUND (GM 2)
- Cooper Brune (0-1) yielded six runs on two hits and five walks to suffer the loss.
- Carson Cook (1-0) gave up one run on four hits with three strikeouts in 4.1 relief innings of work.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Hodges finished game one 2-for-3 with three RBI and a home run.
- Trahan went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI in game one and was 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in game two.
- Dees two hits and with an RBI and Ragland had two hits in game one.
- Brannigan went 5-for-5 with a pair of home runs, a double and three RBI to lead the Hawks at the plate in game one.
- Acevado drove in five runs, four on a grand slam, to lead the Hawks in game two.
- Buttersworth and Gerstner each had three RBI in game two.
- Sargent was 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in game two while Ragland had three hits with two runs scored and an RBI in game two.

The Statesmen travel for a three-game series against the University of Arkansas Monticello on Feb. 12 and 13 in Monticello, Ark. The series begins with a single game on Friday at 2 p.m. followed by a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
