Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- For the first time since the 2012 season, the Delta State University men's soccer team won a Gulf South Conference Tournament match, defeating the Shorter Hawks in a penalty shootout. After 110 minutes of action, the Statesmen won 5-4 on penalty kicks to advance in the tournament.
Hsu-Yang Chang scored the equalizing goal in regulation, while
Mattis Kloepper saved the opening penalty kick to help give the Statesmen the win. It was the first time in program history that Delta State won a penalty shootout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- DSU had the first opportunity of the game with a shot from Jakob Thorup-Petersen that was saved by Shorter in the 12th minute.
- Two minutes later, Tom Toulson received a yellow card for the Green-and-White.
- Remi Emeriau had a shot to the left side of the net but again Shorter's goalkeeper made the save.
- In the 47th minute, Val Evans picked up a yellow card for Shorter.
- Thorup-Petersen took a another shot but it was blocked.
- In the 53rd minute Shorter attempted their first shot of the game but it was saved by Mattis Kloepper.
- In the 55th minute, Statesmen midfielder Hsu-Yang Chang took two quick shots but they were both blocked.
- Then in the 59th minute, Shorter was fouled in the box. On the ensuing penalty kick, Kloepper saved the penalty, but Jackson Wheatley scored on the rebound to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
- Less than a minute later, Chang scored his first career goal on a deflection by Shorter to tie the ball game at 1-1.
- A yellow card from Shorter in the 68th minute brought a free kick from the Statesmen, but it was cleared away.
- In the 70th minute, Bailey Lopez earned his second yellow card and was shown a red card.
- Thorup-Petersen took his third shot of the contest but hit it wide late in regulation.
- In the first overtime period, both teams had free kicks but were unable to get shots off.
- Thorup-Peterson and Haitham Touma both picked up yellow cards in the first overtime.
- Both teams had a shot in the second overtime but both were missed high.
- In the first round of penalty kicks, Kloepper saved the first one while Tom Toulson scored his attempt.
- Both teams scored on the second round of penalties with Thorup-Petersen coverting his shot.
- Eldi Seiti converted his penalty for DSU and Shorter converted theirs as well.
- Andreji Markesic scored his penalty attempt to keep the Statesmen ahead of the Hawks who converted theirs.
- After Shorter made their final shot, Remi Emeriau scored his penalty kick to win the game.
