Lady Statesmen Score Two First Half Goals to Defeat UWA

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Delta State University women's soccer team used two first half goals to pull ahead early and staved off the University of West Alabama 2-1 on Monday afternoon.

The win marked only the second time in school history that DSU has defeated West Alabama. The first time the Lady Statesmen won over the Tigers was in 2013. In that game, DSU won 1-0 in double overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UWA had the first opportunity of the game in the fifth minute, but the shot from Megan Ongteco went wide.
  • A few moments later, Niamh Jestin had DSU's first shot but it was deflected away.
  • DSU scored the opening goal on a header from Nicola Hauk on a pass from Madison Lafontaine.
  • Diana Okechukwu had a penalty shot opportunity in the 15th minute but it was saved by UWA's goalkeeper.
  • Okechukwu followed it up with a shot off the crossbar a minute later.
  • Off a corner kick from Addison Mills in the 33rd minute, Rylee McGee slotted a shot home through the legs of the goalie.
  •  In the second half, UWA took three consecutive shots but Amanda Hilliard saved all three of them.
  • In the 88th minute, Ongteco scored the first goal for UWA on a low shot into the corner.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • DSU out shot UWA 18-8.
  • The Tigers had three shots on target and the Lady Statesmen had six.
  • Hilliard had three saves in the win.
  • There were a combined 16 fouls in the game.
