Late Rally Propels Statesmen to Series Sweep of Montevallo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Delta State University baseball team (21-11, 18-11 GSC) scored seven runs with two outs in the ninth inning to earn a 9-4 win over the University of Montevallo (11-19, 8-19 GSC) in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday at Kermit A. Johnson Field-Riesener Stadium. 
 
Delta State launched a season-high six home runs to take a 13-9 win in game one. Hayden White and Jake Barlow led the home run brigade with two home runs apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 1
  • The Statesmen struck for two runs in the first inning. Chad Ragland walked and scored on Hayden White's home run to right field to give DSU a 2-0 lead.
  • Three runs crossed in the third to make the score 5-0. Ragland and White walked to open the inning. Kirkland Trahan doubled home Ragland and White scored on a Josh Smeltzer ground out. Jake Barlow reached on an error to plate Trahan.
  • Montevallo cut the DSU lead to 5-2 in the third. Greg Lewandoski led off with a solo homer to left and Khalid Collymore singled and scored on an Alex Langford ground out with the bases loaded.
  • White walked and scored on a Trahan double answer the UM third inning run and move the lead to 6-2.
  • UM cut the deficit in half with two runs in the fourth inning. Evan Place singled and scored on a Riley Cain ground out and Brandon Moore singled and scored on a balk.
  • Four home runs powered a five-run sixth inning as the Statesmen took a commanding 11-4 lead. White belted a home run to left centerfield with Ragland onboard with a single. Trahan followed with a solo home run and Smeltzer and Barlow hit back-to-back solo home runs with two outs to cap the inning.
  • Asa Awbrey bases loaded got a run back for UM to make the score 11-5 in the sixth. Charlie Darnall entered the game and got a fly out to get the Statesmen out of a bases loaded jam to end the UM threat.
  • Lewandoski bases clearing three-run double in the eighth narrowed the Statesmen lead to 11-9. Jackson Rutledge struck out Riley Cain with a runner in scoring position to end the inning.
  • The Statesmen padded the lead on a Barlow two-run home run to center to give the Statesmen an 13-9 lead in the ninth.
ON THE MOUND | GM 1
  • Christian Day (4-2) pitched 5.2 innings, giving up five runs, four earned on nine hits with a strikeout to earn the win.
  • Loan Samuels (0-2) allowed five runs on four hits with two strikeouts and three walks to take the loss for UM.
  • Jackson Rutledge (1) worked 1.1 scoreless innings three strikeouts to register the save.  
HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 2
  • The Falcons had the first scoring chance in the fifth. Ryan Curran led off with a double but was thrown out by the right fielder Trahan on a Brennan Ferguson single to end the inning.
  • Montevallo took a 2-0 lead off a Ben Teal two-run home run with Cain aboard on an error.
  • The Statesmen pushed two runs across in the seventh to tie the game 2-2. Dendy singled and moved to second on a fielding error before scoring on a Ragland sac-fly to right field. Dees came home on a wild pitch to tie the game.
  • UM regained the lead with a run in the seventh. Curran doubled and scored on a Reed Latimer single.
  • Mathew Sneed came on in relief of starter Josh Lewis and rolled double play to end the seventh.
  • The Statesmen scored sevenr runs with two outs to take a 9-4 lead in the top of the ninth. Down to their final out, Chad Ragland tripled and White walked to set up a Trahan RBI game-tying RBI double. Trahan moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Smeltzer single to short stop to give DSU a 5-4 lead. Wyatt Pratt followed with a two-run double and Dendy capped the inning with a two-run home run to right.
  • Childree allowed a hit in the scoreless ninth to close the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GM 2
  • TJ Childree (2-2) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, giving up three hits with a strikeout to earn the win for the Statesmen.
  • Kuster Kinlecheenie (2-2) gave up three runs on two hits with a walk to take the loss.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE 
  • The Statesmen pelted a season-high six home runs in game one. Barlow and Hayden White led the way with two home runs apiece while Trahan and Smeltzer had one each.
  • White finished 3-for-3 with four RBI and two, two-run home runs in gam one.
  • Barlow capped game one going 2-for-5 with three RBI.
  • Evan Place garnered three hits and Lewandoski drove in four runs to pace Montevallo.
  • Dendy was 3-for-5 with three RBI, including highlighting the ninth inning with two-run home run in game two.
  • Ragland went 2-for-4 with a triple that started the ninth inning rally.
  • Trahan was 2-for-4 with two RBI in game including the game tying two-run RBI in the ninth.
  • Smeltzer was also 2-for-5 with an RBI in game two.
