Allen's Walk Off Blast Lifts Statesmen Past Valdosta State

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Michael Allen belted a two-run walkoff home run in the ninth to help the Delta State University baseball team (13-10, 11-10 GSC) claim a 5-3 win over Valdosta State University (14-10, 12-9 GSC) on Friday at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field.

 HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Valdosta State staked a 1-0 lead when Jowenrick Daantji singled and scored on a Logan Stephen single. 
  • The Blazers tacked two more runs on a Daantji two-run single to move the lead to 3-0 in the third.
  • Delta State pushed three runs across to tie the game in the eighth. Wyatt Pratt singled and Chad Ragland was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Hayden White reached on an error that allowed Pratt to score Kirkland Trahan doubled home White and Ragland scored on a Blake Wolferding sac-fly.
  • TJ Childree posted two strikeouts and a ground out to keep the game tied 3-3 heading to the bottom of the ninth.
  • Kade Dees struck out swinging but reached on a wild pitched and Darek Sargent flew out to begin the last of the ninth. Allen then promptly belted the 1-1 pitch over to the left field wall for the walk off win. 
ON THE MOUND
  • Childree (1-2) worked scoreless ninth with two strikeouts to earn the win for the Statesmen. 
  • DSU starter Josh Lewis gave up three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts in his second start of the season. 
  • Charles Darnall allowed one hit in two scoreless innings. 
  • Elijah Gills (2-3) tossed seven innings, allowing no runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks as the pitcher of record for the Blazers. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Allen's home run was his first of the season and was the 30th home run of the 
  • Trahan had a double with an RBI followed by Wolferding and White with an RBI. 
  • Daantji had two hits and two RBI to lead three Blazers with two hits. 
  • Ben Rowdon and Logan Stephens also had two hits for the Statesmen.
  • The Blazers outhit the Statesmen 10-6. 
  • Delta State extended its series-long winning streak to nine and improved to 11-8 at Ferriss Field against the Blazers.
