CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The Delta State University football team (1-0) scored 20 points in the first quarter and rode that momentum to a 48-14 win over Bethel University (0-1) on Thursday night at Parker Field-McCool Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Statesmen took two plays to tally their first points after a Sherrod Page interception. Rico Owens capped a two-play drive with a six-yard run to give DSU a 7-0 lead with 13:22 to go in the opening quarter.
- The Statesmen capitalized on a 36-yard touchdown pass by Patrick Shegog for a 13-0 lead after the extra point when just wide.
- Shegog hooked up with Dohnte Meyers for a 28-yard touchdown pass for a 20-0 lead after the first quarter.
- Tight end Adam Duncan caught a 38-yard pass from Shegog early in the second quarter for a 27-0 lead.
- Owens added 33-yard run at the 12:24 mark of the second quarter to give the Statesmen a 34-0 lead.
- Nolan Chowbay tossed a 34-yard pass to Dieuly Aristidle get Bethel on the board trailing 34-7 with 4:18 left in the second quarter.
- Deion Dampier caught a 30-yard pass from Cole Kirk to give Delta State a 41-7 lead with 4:38 left in the third quarter.
- Chowbay tossed a 10-yard pass to Quashawn Ford to close the third quarter scoring as the Statemen leading 41-14.
- Kory Gainwell added a 20-yard touchdown scamper for the final points of the night to provide DSU with a 48-14 lead.
OFFENSIVE NOTEABLES:
- Delta State had six different players rush the football led by Owens II who tallied 85 yards on eight carries and two touchdowns.
- Shegog completed 16-of-19 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns.
- Kirk, who tossed his first career touchdown pass in the third quarter, finished 11-of-15 for 122 yards.
- Dohnte Meyers had five catches for 85 yards and a touchdown along with Deion Dampier's five grabs for 62 yards and two touchdowns.
- The Statesmen ran 67 plays totaling 509 yards, 237 yards passing and 191 yards on the ground.
DEFENSIVE NOTEABLES:
- Sherrod Page intercepted his first pass for DSU and finished the night with two of the Statesmen's four picks.
- Page also led the Statesmen with seven tackles, six solo.
- Junior Faulk's first quarter interception was his 10th career interception.
- Ty Woods intercepted his first career pass and also recovered a fumble.
SPECIAL TEAMS NOTEABLES:
- Parker Burleson punted three times for a 51.3 yard average per punt with a long of 59 in his Statesmen debut.
- Kory Gainwell returned two kickoffs for 86 yard with a long return of 48 yards.

- Marvin Terry became the first Statesmen in school history to wear jersey number zero following the NCAA's new ruling allowing the number zero to be worn by an eligible number.
- Delta State improved to 37-5 under Todd Cooley when holding a lead at halftime.
- Delta State is 7-4-1 overall against Bethel and 6-4-1 at home.
- Delta State is 5-0 at home and 7-1 in season openers under Cooley while DSU improved to 157-62 all-time in openers.
