JACKSON, Miss. -- A rally from a 17-point halftime deficit fell short for No. 25 Delta State University (2-2) as Jackson State University (3-1) held on for a 24-17 on Saturday in the W.C. Gorden Classic at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Statesmen drove to the JSU seven yard line on the game's final drive, but
Patrick Shegog's pass fell incomplete on fourth and two to end the drive with five seconds remaining.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Glenn Misiak kicked a 40-yard field goal on Jackson State's first offensive possession for a 3-0 lead with 11:07 left in the first quarter.
- The Statesmen had a chance to tie the game but CJ Holmes blocked Connor Mantelli 39-yard field goal with 4:19 to play in the first quarter.
- Jackson State took advantage of a Statesmen fumble to take a 10-0 lead. Keith Corbin hauled in an 11-yard scoring strike from Shedeur Sanders with under a minute to play in the first quarter.
- Misiak then missed a 39-yard field goal attempt to the right, holding the JSU lead at 10-0 with 4:32 to go in the first half.
- Warren Newman returned a Delta State punt 55 yards to set up a Sanders to Corbin 13-yard touchdown pass to give the Tigers a 17-0 halftime lead.
- The Statesmen got on the board when Shegog tossed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Dohnte Meyers to trim the JSU lead to 17-7 at the 4:32 mark of the third quarter.
- JSU answered on its ensuing possession, striking on a Sanders to Warren Newman six-yard pass to push the Tigers' lead to 24-7 with 1:16 remaining in the third.
- Deion Dampier raced 64 yards for a touchdown as the Statesmen trailed 24-14 heading into the fourth quarter.
- Devontre Henderson recovered a JSU fumble to set up a Mantelli 41-yard field go to cut deficit to 24-17 with 14:50 left in the final quarter.
- The Statesmen drove to the JSU 7-yard line only to have Patrick Shegog's pass fall incomplete on fourth and two to end the drive with five seconds left.
OFFENSIVE NOTEABLES:
- Dampier finished with eight rushes for 93 yards, inlcuding a 64-yard touchdown run.
- Meyers had three catches for 54 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown reception.
- Todd Lee Battle also had three grabs for 23 yards and Corintheus Edmonds had two receptions for 10 yards.
- Shegog finished 12-for-33 for 91 yards and a touchdown behind center for the Statesmen.
- The Statesmen offensive gave up their first two sacks of the season but have yielded only two sacks in 130 pass attempts.
DEFENSIVE NOTEABLES:
- Delta State held the Tigers to 177 yards in the first half and yielded 316 for the game.
- The Statesmen recorded five sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss.
- Marvin Terry had 11 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and one tackle for loss.
- Dante Williams posted 11 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.
- John Boyd registered eight tackles and a tackle for loss.
- Junior Faulk and Dayreke Snow each had a pair of pass breakups.
SPECIAL TEAMS NOTEABLES:
- Mantelli's 41-yard field goal in the third quarter set a new career-long.
- Parker Burleson, who entered the day leading the Gulf South Conference with 44.7 yards per punt average, punt eight times for 39.1 yards per punt with a long of 51 yards and two inside the 20.
- Kory Gainwell averaged 23.7 yards on three kickoff returns, entering the game ranked second in the GSC with 26.9 yards per kick return.
OTHER NOTEABLES:
- Jackson State won the toss and deferred to the second half, making the Statesmen 2-2 in coin tosses in 2021.
- The Statesmen defense ranks second in the GSC with eight sacks and now have 13 after recording five versus JSU.
- The Statesmen are 2-2 at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium since 2000.
