CLEVELAND, Miss. -- The 13th-ranked Statesmen (7-0 overall, 4-0 GSC) stood strong at home once again and got another statement GSC win, this time against rival West Alabama (4-3, 2-2). The Statesmen out-gained a Tiger offense 494-341 in total yardage, but the larger story was told specifically in the rushing statistics. West Alabama had rushed for 300+ yards in the prior two weeks, but could only muster 132 yards on the ground to DSU's 297 rushing yards.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The first quarter ended in a scoreless tie and saw Statesmen punter Parker Burleson park three punts inside the UWA 11-yard line. The Tigers punted twice in the quarter, but their first possession ended with an interception by Delta State's Tamos Stevenson.

Delta State began the second quarter in the middle of a 5-play, 85-yard drive that ended with a 44-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Shegog to Tremell Withrow. 7-0 Delta State.

A West Alabama turnover-on-downs would give the Statesmen the ball at their own 39-yard line. The Statesmen would get as close as 3rd-and-goal from the UWA 1-yard line, but the drive ended with kicker Nick Herber nailing his attempt from 19 yards out. 10-0 Delta State.

The Tigers would find the endzone two possessions later on an 11-play, 58-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard rush from Tucker Melton. It would also be the last score before the end of the half. 10-7 Delta State.

Delta State stalls again on 3rd-and-goal on their first possession of the third quarter. Herber split the uprights again, this time from 31 yards out. 13-7 Delta State.

The Statesmen added one more score before the end of the third on a 4-play drive that ended with a 55-yard touchdown pass from Shegog to Tyler Kennedy. It would also be the final scoring play of the game. 20-7 Delta State.

The two teams punted twice each in the fourth quarter, but the final DSU punt ended up being the final nail in the coffin for West Alabama. Burleson's punt was muffed by the Tiger returner and recovered by DSU's William Carter at the UWA 21-yard line with 4:04 left in the game. Delta State ran the clock out from there. 20-7 Delta State.
