PREVIEW: Women's Soccer Opens GSC Tournament Play Sunday

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State Women's Soccer (10-6-2 overall, 7-4-2 GSC) earned the sixth seed in the GSC conference tournament and will take on third place West Alabama (10-5-1, 9-3-1) in the first round. Delta State won the previous meeting earlier this season 1-0 at Delta Field, but the Lady Statesmen will have to play the Tigers on their home turf in Livingston, Ala. for their tournament meeting.

"We played a great game at home against them earlier in the season," said head coach Mark Hiller. "They're really tough to beat at home, (West Alabama) is 7-0 at home. It'll be a different game than the first, much more emotional. I'm looking forward to it."

The first time these two teams met this season, Lady Statesmen Ella McQueen scored the lone goal 10 minutes in with an assist by Poppy Derhun. Delta State had the edge in total shots at 8-4 and shots on goal at 5-3. Delta State goalkeeper Bailey Daughtery recorded 3 saves in her 90 minutes.

McQueen found herself in front of the net a number of times against West Alabama, recording 4 of DSU's 8 shots, 3 of which were on goal. "The key to this game from an attacking point of view is getting the ball to people who want to attack and take people on," said Hiller. "Ella did well against them last year as well (with that mindset). I can't say she'll have the same kind of performance, but she has definitely played well against them."

Delta State and West Alabama will kick off Sunday, October 30 at 3:30 pm at UWA's Tiger Stadium. A live stream will be available through FloSports (https://go.flosports.tv/partner/gulf-south).
