#6 Statesmen Fall at Home to #19 West Georgia

CLEVELAND, Miss.  -- Delta State Football (9-1 overall, 6-1 GSC) suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday against the West Georgia Wolves (7-2, 5-2), who were playing for their playoff lives. The Wolves were on the outside of the first regional poll rankings despite entering the week as the 19th-ranked team in the AFCA poll. The Wolves out-scored the Statesmen 28-7 in the fourth quarter, including the go-ahead touchdown with 5 seconds left in regulation and a fumble-recovery touchdown on the kickoff that followed with the Statesmen attempting lateral passes.
The Statesmen finish their conference schedule as co-conference champions with #8 West Florida. The two schools finished their conference schedules with 6-1 records after the Argonauts survived a 32-31 overtime thriller at Valdosta State on Saturday. The conference title is Delta State's first in football since 2014.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The teams traded punts on their opening drives before the Statesmen opened up the scoring with a 12-yard touchdown scramble by Patrick Shegog with 9:14 left in the first. The scoring drive for the Statesmen used 6 plays to move 70 yards in just 1:29. 7-0 Delta State.

  • The Wolves tied the game 11 plays later on a 14-yard rush from running back Jaxton Carson. 7-7 tie.

  • Shegog would hit Jaylen Green for a 13-yard scoring strike 13 plays later to put the Statesmen back in front with 1:11 left in the first. 14-7 Delta State.

  • The Wolves were forced to punt on the first play of the second quarter. Delta State would answer three plays later on a pass that was nearly intercepted by UWG, but instead deflected into the hands of DSU's Kelvin Smith. Smith then turned on the burners for the 56-yard score. 21-7 Delta State.

  • The Wolves responded 7 plays later on a 3-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Harrison Frost to Steve Peterson. 21-14 Delta State.

  • The two teams traded punting drives before Delta State found the endzone again with 2:34 left in the first half. Shegog connected with Dohnte Meyers from 5-yards out to complete an 8-play, 36-yard drive. 28-14 Delta State.

  • The Wolves capped the scoring in the first half with a 35-yard field goal from kicker Nick Pellegrino. 28-17 Delta State at halftime.
  • Delta State began the scoring in the second half following a fumble recovery by DSU's William Carter. Shegog capped the ensuing 6-play, 31-yard drive with a 2-yard rushing score. 35-17 Delta State.

  • West Georgia quarterback Harrison Frost ended the scoring in the third with a 7-yard touchdown rush of his own with 50 seconds left in the quarter. 35-24 Delta State.
     
  • The Statesmen started the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 5-yard pass from Shegog to Jordan Jernigan with 10:45 left in regulation. 42-24 Delta State.
  • The Wolves answered 12 plays later on a 24-yard pass from Frost to LaPerion Perry with 7:56 remaining. 42-31 Delta State.

  • West Georgia forced a Delta State punt on their next drive. The Wolves took 10 plays to go 91 yards, ending the drive with a 43-yard touchdown pass from Frost to Zay Britt. The Wolves also converted the Philly Special two-point conversion attempt to pull within 3 points with 3:11 remaining. 42-39 Delta State.
  • Delta State forced the Wolves to burn all of their timeouts on the following DSU drive. The Statesmen had the ball at the West Georgia 31-yard line with 1:31 left, but a Statesmen fumble gave the Wolves the ball back with 1:19 remaining. West Georgia scored 7 plays later on a 29-yard pass from Frost to Ronnie Blackmon to give the Wolves the lead for the first time in the game with just 5 seconds left. 46-42 West Georgia.

  • The Statesmen attempted several lateral passes on the ensuing kickoff in an attempt to make a miracle happen, but a fumble was recovered by the Wolves in the endzone with zeroes on the clock to seal the upset for West Georgia. 52-42 West Georgia.

OFFENSIVE NOTABLES:

  • Patrick Shegog was 22-for-13 for 287 yards with four touchdown passes and one interception. He also carried the ball 14 times for 80 yards and two touchdowns.

  • Dohnte Meyers caught 8 passes for a team-high 102 yards and one touchdown.

  • Todd Lee Battle caught four passes for 62 yards.

DEFENSIVE NOTABLES:

  • Malik Jones recorded 10 tackles (all solo) and 3 pass break-ups. Patrick Lee Jr. and Tyrell Goldsmith also recorded 2 pass break-ups each with 11 total tackles (9 solo) for Lee and 5 tackles (all solo) for Goldsmith.

  • Timaje Porter and Lamarcus Faulkner recorded 1.5 sacks each.

  • William Carter recorded 3 tackles (all solo) and a fumble recovery that was forced by Faulkner.


SPECIAL TEAMS NOTABLES:

  • Parker Burleson added four more touchbacks to his nation-leading mark at 34. He also punted the ball six times. All six punts were stopped inside the 20-yard line while also recording 3 punts of 50+ yards,

  • Nick Herber was six-for-six in his PAT attempts.

  • Tyler Kennedy returned 3 kickoffs for 74 combined yards, including one return of 48 yards.

OTHER NOTABLES:

  • Wolves out-gain the Statesmen 591-434 in total yardage. Delta State out-rushed the Wolves 147-88.

  • Delta State finishes GSC play as co-conference champions with West Florida. The conference title is the first for the Statesmen football program since 2014.
