Lady Statesmen Split Senior Day Doubleheader With CBU

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Delta State University softball team split a doubleheader with Christian Brothers University on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at University Field.

In game one, Karley Bloesch hit a walk-off double to win the game. CBU responded with a win in the seventh inning in game two when Ashley Dyer hit the go-ahead home run.

Before the games, Delta State honored five Lady Statesmen senior players who will be graduating at the end of the semester.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 1
  • In the top of the first, RJ Simpson drove in Ashley Dyer to give CBU the 1-0 lead.
  • Savannah Crockett scored for CBU in the top of the second to make it 2-0.
  • Ashley Dyer tried to score on a single from Memory Willingham but was thrown out at home.
  • Simpson hit a solo home run in the third inning to make it 3-0.
  • MyCala Helms at the first hit for DSU in the fifth inning, but was stranded at third base.
  • Helms tied the ball game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run home run which scored Taylor Picou and Kailyn Lofton.
  • Ashley Dyer doubled and then was brought home by Willingham to give CBU the 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Karley Bloesch hit a double to score Alana Walker and Chrissy Tubbs to win the game.
IN THE CIRCLE | GAME 1
  • Lace Coats (9-12) earned the win giving up four runs on five hits. She walked six batters and struck out four.
  • Mackenzie Puckett (5-7) gave up five runs on six hits. She walked six and struck out two.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 2
  • Tubbs had a double in the first inning for DSU but was left stranded.
  • Delta State took the lead in the bottom of the second when Jenny Griggers squeezed Helms home on a bunt.
  • In the top of the fifth inning, Dyer hit a three-run home run to give CBU the 3-1 lead.
  • After a Helms double, Picou hit a two-run home run to straight away center field to tie the game at 3-3.
  • Ashley Dyer hit her second home run of the game in the seventh inning to make it 4-3.
  • Olivia Burns was thrown out at home on a sacrifice fly attempt to end the game.
IN THE CIRCLE | GAME 2
  • Hannah Hasle (8-6) went two innings in relief and gave up one hit and one run
  • Makenna Keeton got the start and went five innings. She gave up six hits and three runs.
  • Kelsey Wurm (6-6) threw two innings for CBU and earned the win. She gave up one hit.
  • Macy Cumming went five innings and gave up three runs on eight hits.
NOTABLES 
  • Helms hit her fourth home run of the season which is tied for second best on the Delta State team.
  • Picou hit her second home run of the season and the 17th of her career to move her into a tie for seventh all time in Delta State history. 
  • Helms had four hits in the two games.
  • The five seniors honored before the game were Picou, Tubbs, Lofton, Katelyn Hayman, and Burns.
