Statesmen Baseball Falls in Extras at Henderson State

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Statesmen baseball led by multiple runs twice in Tuesday's non-conference trip to Henderson State, but the Reddies found runs at the right times to take the game to extra innings. A walk-off home run by HSU's Greyson Stevens sealed the game for the Reddies in the bottom of the tenth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kirkland Trahan hit a double with two outs in the top of the first. He came around to score on a throwing error following an infield hit by Brett Burrell. Henderson's Luke Farrar led the bottom of the first with a single, but was caught on a steal attempt to second. Both teams stranded runners in each half-inning in the second, third, and fourth innings. 1-0 Delta State after 4.
  • Walks to Brendan McCauley and Trahan led to an RBI single for Burrell in the top of the fifth. Trahan was out at third on the hit, by McCauley would score all the way from second. Matt Corder followed with an RBI triple to score Burrell from first. Noah Thigpen drew a walk and scored on a two-out, two RBI single by Connar Gardner that also scored Corder. 5-0 Delta State after 5.
  • Delta State stranded two runners after leadoff walks to start the sixth. A Greyson Stevens leadoff triple in the bottom of the sixth would eventually result in the first Reddie run. HSU loaded the bases for right fielder Charles Hoof, who hit a two-out grand slam to tie the game. Tied 5-5 after 6.
  • The Statesmen regained momentum and the lead in the top of the seventh after Brett Cobb and Thigpen scored after two more leadoff walks. A passed ball scored HSU's Argenbright in the bottom of the inning to cut into the fresh Delta State lead. A leadoff HBP in the bottom of the eighth eventually came around to score the tying run in the eighth. Tied 7-7 after 8.
  • Matthew Nichols hit a one-out single in the top of the ninth, but was eventually stranded. Argenbright led the HSU ninth with a double and moved to third on a ground out. Two walks (one intentional) loaded the bases with one out. Logan Cromer picked up a huge strikeout for the second out and forced a groundout to leave the ninth unscathed. Tied 7-7 after 9.
  • Delta State fell in order in the tenth. HSU started the tenth with a strikeout and a groundout, but Stevens sent a 2-0 pitch over the right field wall to give Henderson State the walk-off win. 8-7 Henderson State Final.
ON THE MOUND 
  • Starter Jesse Homan pitched 3.0 innings. He gave up no runs with two hits and struck out three.
  • Drake Fontenot pitched the fourth inning and allowed no runs with only one hit and two strikeouts.
  • Evan Bynum pitched 1.1 innings. He allowed four runs on three hits with a strikeout and a walk.
  • Trace McNabb also pitched 1.1 innings, allowing a run and a hit while striking out two.
  • Duke Jordan and Cade Hodges pitched 0.1 innings each. They also gave up a run and a hit apiece.
  • Logan Cromer pitched the final 2.1 innings. He allowed only one run on three hits and struck out three.
