Statesmen Split Doubleheader, Win Wild Series Against Union

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State wins a chaotic series against the Union Bulldogs, splitting day two's doubleheader after winning game one in walk-off fashion Friday night. No lead was safe in game one on Saturday, but the Statesmen pulled away late to secure the series win. Union got hits at opportune times to win Saturday's second game and avoid the series sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Union stranded a runner in the top of the first. Carson Clowers led the Statesmen half of the first and stole second just before Jonathan Dewberry drew a walk. Kirkland Trahan then singled to load the bases. Brett Burrell's RBI single moved everyone up 90 feet, then Eric Newsom was hit by a pitch to plate the second DSU run. Taylor Woodcock hit into a double play, but still scored Trahan from third. Matthew Nichols' RBI double scored Burrell to end the scoring in the first. 4-0 Delta State after 1.
  • Union stranded another baserunner in the second after a leadoff hit. Brendan McCauley led the DSU second with a single and advanced to second after a Clowers walk. Burrell was walked to load the bases, then Newsom singled to score McCauley and Clowers. 6-0 Delta State after 2.
  • Union again stranded a runner in the third. McCauley got on base with a two-out single, then moved to third after walks to Clowers and Dewberry. Everyone would come into score after a Trahan grand slam to extend the DSU lead. 10-0 Delta State after 3.
  • Union responded in a huge way in the fourth inning. Eight hits, including two home runs, helped score 10 Bulldog runs as Union closed their deficit in one inning. Newsom drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fourth, but was eventually left on base. Tied 10-10 after 4.
  • Union fell in order in the fifth and Delta State left Clowers at second following a one-out double. Both teams stranded runners in the sixth. A two-out RBI double gave Union the lead in the top of the seventh. Jonathan Dewberry answered with a three-run homer that scored Clowers and Noah Thigpen in the bottom half of the inning. 13-11 Delta State after 7.
  • Union fell in order in the eighth inning. Clowers got on with a one-out single and also stole second. Dewberry and Trahan were walked to load the bases for Burrell, who then hit DSU's second grand slam of the night to seal the Delta State win as the Bulldogs fell in order in the ninth inning. 17-11 Delta State Final.
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Union struck early with a one-out RBI single in the first with two total hits in the inning for the Bulldogs. The Statesmen fell in order with two groundouts and strikeout. 1-0 Union after 1.
  • Union fell in order in the second and Burrell picked up the first DSU hit in the second, but was left at third with two outs. Union fell in order again in the third and Delta State left another runner on in the bottom half of the third. Two lead-off hits in the fourth for Union came in on a one-out double to extend the Union lead, then a throwing error allowed two more Bulldogs to score with two away in the inning. Delta State couldn't answer in the bottom of the fourth. 5-0 Union after 4.
  • Both teams stranded a runner in the fifth. A lead-off walk for Union eventually scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the sixth. Delta State got two hits out of Trahan and Burrell in the sixth, but left them on base. Union stranded two and Delta State left one on base to end the seventh and the ballgame. 6-0 Union Final.
ON THE MOUND
  • Game one starter Drake Fontenot pitched 3.0 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
  • Cade Hodges relieved Fontenot and pitched 2.2 innings. He allowed four runs on four hits with a strikeout and three walks.
  • Noah Magee pitched 1.0 inning. He allowed only one run on one hit with two strikeouts to one walk.
  • Logan Cromer (W, 4-1) picked up the game-one win. He pitched 2.1 innings, allowing no runs or hits, and struck out two to only one walk.
  • Game two starter Jesse Homan (L, 0-1) pitched 3.1 innings. He allowed five runs on five hits with three strikeouts to one walk.
  • Steven Lacey pitched 2.2 innings in relief of Homan. He allowed one run on one hit with five strikeouts and one walk.
  • Josh Hill pitched the seventh inning for the Statesmen, allowing no runs on two hits.
UP NEXT
Delta State is back at home Tues 3/21 and Wed 3/22 for a two-game homestand against Arkansas Tech. The Statesmen return to GSC play Fri 3/24 with a three-game series at Auburn-Montgomery.
