Timely Hitting Gives Statesmen Sweep Over Arkansas Tech

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Opportunity was the word of the day as the Statesmen made the most of theirs and picked up their second victory over #20 Arkansas Tech. The Statesmen and Wonder Boys recorded 13 hits each on Wednesday, but the Statesmen continually put base runners in the right place at the right time.
"We swung the bat much better today. We got timely hits from all over the lineup," said Head Coach Rodney Batts. "We got two wins against a really good team. Our pitchers did really well, I saw a lot of encouraging things over the last two days."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Harrison Haley struck out two as the Wonder Boys fell in order in the first. Jonathan Dewberry led the Statesmen first with a single, then stole second. Carson Clowers grounded out, but moved Dewberry to third. Kirkland Trahan was hit by a pitch, then Brett Burrell singled to score Dewberry. Taylor Woodcock was later walked to load the bases. Matthew Nichols plated the second Statesmen run after taking an HBP. Hayden Cooper cleared the bases with a 3 RBI double to cap the DSU scoring for the first. 5-0 Delta State after 1.
  • Tech picked up their first two hits in the second, but stranded both runners in scoring position. Clowers drew a one-out walk in the second. He stole second and third, but would've scored from any base after Trahan's two-run homer to left center. 7-0 Delta State after 2.
  • Tech left another runner on base in the third as the Statesmen fell in order. Tech put two on base to lead the fourth and loaded the bases with two outs. A walk and a 2 RBI single plated the first Tech runs of the game. Bunt singles by Brendan McCauley and Clowers and a single by Dewberry loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth. Trahan's sac fly to center scored McCauley, then Dewberry and Clowers scored on a 2 RBI double by Brett Burrell. 10-3 Delta State after 4.
  • Tech loaded the bases with two away in the fifth. A double by pinch hitter Aaron Hogue scored two more Wonder Boy runs. Nichols doubled and scored on a Hayden Cooper two-run bomb in the bottom of the fifth. 12-5 Delta State after 5.
  • Tech again loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth. A one-out double scored two and a wild pitch scored the third ATU run of the inning. A 6-4-3 double play ended their scoring threat with a runner at third. Burrell and Newsom scored on a 2 RBI single by Cooper with the bases loaded and two away. 14-8 Delta State after 6.
  • The two teams stranded six runners between themselves in the seventh and eighth innings. Duke Jordan allowed a hit, but successfully closed the door in the ninth to seal the series win.
