HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brendan McCauley hit a one-out single and stole second just before Kirkland Trahan drew a walk with a full count. The next batter, Hayden Cooper brought everyone in on the next pitch with a homer over the left field wall. MC picked up a hit and stranded two in the first. 3-0 Delta State after 1.
  • DSU only sent three to the plate in the second. MC picked up seven runs on seven hits, including a stretch of five-straight RBI singles. The Choctaws left the bases stranded as well. 7-3 MC after 2.
  • Delta State went in order as the Choctaws stranded one in the third. Brett Cobb singled and was left on in the third as MC went in order. Matthew Nichols drew a hit in the DSU half of the fifth as MC left two on base. 7-3 MC after 5.
  • The Statesmen left two on base as the Choctaws left one on in the sixth. Dewberry, McCauley, and Trahan all drew two-out walks to load the bases in the top of the seventh, but all three runners were left on. MC went in order in the bottom of the seventh. 7-3 MC after 7.
  • Eric Newsom singled and Cobb drew an HBP to lead the Statesmen half of the eighth. Noah Thigpen singled to center, but the centerfielder misplayed the ball, allowing Newsom and Cobb to score as Thigpen walked into third. Nichols then hit a groundout to second, but was able to score Thigpen on the play. MC left a runner at second after a two-out double. 7-6 MC after 8.
  • McCauley found an infield single to lead the ninth, but a double-play and a groundout ended the DSU threat. 7-6 MC final.
