HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Shorter put two on base after a single and a walk with two outs, but the DSU defense stranded both. Brendan McCauley got the scoring started with a solo home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the first. Kirkland Trahan also drew a walk and Eric Newsom drew a hit-by-pitch. 1-0 Delta State after 1.
  • Shorter fell in order in the top of the second. Taylor Woodcock doubled down the first base line with two away in the bottom of the second. Noah Thigpen brought him in with an RBI single over the head of the Shorter third baseman. 2-0 Delta State after 2.
  • The Hawks picked up a one-out single but the runner was caught at second trying to stretch it into a double. Jonathan Dewberry hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the third. Trahan doubled the DSU lead with a wheelhouse homer to right field. Hayden Cooper then singled and Newsom doubled to put the pair in scoring position. Brett Cobb scored Cooper on an RBI sac fly. 5-0 Delta State after 3.
  • Kameron Koch struck out two as Shorter stranded a runner in the top of the fourth. McCauley singled and Trahan drew a walk with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. A two-out RBI double, an obstruction call, and an RBI single put Shorter on the board in the top of the fifth as Delta State picked up a hit from Newsom. 5-3 Delta State after 5.
  • Shorter took the lead in the top of the sixth on a two-out 3 RBI double as Delta State saw just four pitched in their half of the inning. 6-5 Shorter after 6.
  • The Hawks picked up a hit in the top of the seventh, but a 6-4-3 double play would end the threat. Trahan tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a solo homer to left center. Hayden Cooper regained the DSU lead five pitches later as he cranked a homer to the left field parking lot. Newsom, Carson Clowers, and Taylor Woodcock were walked with one out to load the bases. Thigpen reached first safely on a fielder's choice that scored Brett Burrell (representing Newsom). 8-6 Delta State after 7.
  • Shorter picks up a runner but strands him in the top of the eighth. Brendan McCauley hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the eighth before walks to Trahan and Burrell loaded the bases with one out. Cobb's sac fly to right scored McCauley and Clowers was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs, but a fly out ended the DSU scoring threat. 9-6 Delta State after 8.
  • Shorter picked up a hit to lead off the ninth, but a flyout and a double play initiated by Clowers ended the scoring threat and the game. 9-6 Delta State final.
