Delta State opened their season with a 48-20 win at Missouri S&T last Thursday. The Statesmen racked up 453 yards of offense on just 52 plays for a whopping average of 8.7 yards per play. Defense and special teams also came through with three takeaways and a punt block.
Kickoff between the Delta State Statesmen and the Chowan Hawks is scheduled for Saturday, September 9 at 1 p ET (12p CT).

SERIES NOTEBOOK: CHOWAN
• This is just the second-ever meeting between Delta State and Chowan. The previous meeting was a 42-13 win for the Statesmen in Cleveland, coincidentally also taking place on September 9th of 2017.
• The Hawks finished 7-4 in 2022, most notably with a 7-1 record in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association play. Two of the four losses were to Fayetteville State, the latter of which being the CIAA Championship game that sent Fayetteville State to Delta State for the first round of the NCAA Playoffs.
• The Hawks averaged 25 points per game last season with 196.4 passing and 169.5 rushing yards per game. The Hawks scored on just 19 of their 33 redzone trips (.576) compared to Delta State's mark of 63-of-68 (.926) in 2022.
• Chowan opened their season last week with a 41-0 loss at Barton College. The Hawks managed 129 total yards of offense on 45 plays. Quarterback Rashad McKee completed 12 of his 21 passes for 102 yards with 2 interceptions. He was also tied with rusher Divon Woods for the team's high in rushing with 12 yards each.
ROAD WARRIORS PART TWO: The Statesmen answered last season's challenge of seven road games with seven road victories. While there are only five games away from Parker-McCool this season, the first two games of the 2023 campaign are road trips to Missouri S&T and Chowan. A win at Chowan would extend the Statesmen's road win streak to an impressive nine games.
TURNOVER BATTLE: Delta State's defense created three extra opportunities for their offense against Missouri S&T.
Adrian Hill recovered two fumbles, one forced by
Joseph Barton, and
Jarvis Townsend intercepted a pass. Special teams also got in on the action after a punt block by
Tamaj Hoffman.
