Dylan Coleman's Late Grand Slam Propels Statesmen Past Bulldogs

JACKSON, Tenn. – Delta State Baseball began GSC play Friday night at Union. The Statesmen trailed midway through the game, but a grand slam by Dylan Coleman gave Delta State the lead and the momentum the rest of the way. Starting pitcher Drake Fontenot struck out 12 as he picked up his third win of 2024.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams sent just three to the plate in the first inning. Dylan Coleman and Blayke Dendy recorded the first hits of the game in the top of the second. Union picked up their first base-runner in the second, but a double play turned by Coleman, Brendan McCauley, and Braiden Jones ended the inning. Delta State fell in order in the third. Union picked up their first hit with two outs in the third, but stranded the runner after Drake Fontenot pitched an inning-ending strikeout. Scoreless after three.
  • Delta State went in order again in the top of the fourth. A leadoff triple led to the first Union run in the bottom of the fourth after an RBI sac groundout scored the runner. 1-0 Union after four.
  • The Statesmen had two aboard in the fifth after HBPs to Jones and Triston Hickman. Taylor Woodcock flared a ball into center to reach, and the throw-in got away from the Union catcher, allowing Jones to score on the play. A reach on a dropped third strike allowed Fontenot to strike out four in the bottom of the fifth. Tied 1-1 after five.
  • Brett Burrell recorded a hit in the top of the sixth. Union picked up two hits and had runners at second and third with one out. A wild pitch and a single allowed both runs to score. 3-1 Union after six.
  • Jones and Dendy singled to lead the seventh to put runners at the corners. Hickman hit an RBI sac groundout to score Jones, allowing Dendy to advance to third as well. Woodcock singled up the middle to score Dendy. Woody was called out on a fielder's choice hit by Wes Warnock. Warnock moved to third on a single by McCauley. Burrell was walked to load the bases. Dylan Coleman gave DSU the lead with a two-out opposite-field grand slam. The Bulldogs went down in order. 7-3 DSU after seven.
  • Braiden Jones led the eighth with a single and scored on an RBI single by Dendy in the next at-bat. Hickman also singled to put runners at first and second, and Woodcock was walked to load the bases. A balk allowed Dendy to score before Warnock singled to bring in Hickman and Woodcock. Union loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but Fontenot struck out two more Bulldogs to end the scoring threat. 11-3 Delta State after eight.
  • Coleman led the ninth with a double, but was stranded at third. The Bulldogs scored four in the ninth, including a two-run home run. 11-7 Delta State final.

  • Starter Drake Fontenot pitched 8.0 innings, striking out 12 and allowing just 3 runs, 6 hits, and 3 walks 
  • Brody Walker pitched the ninth, allowing 4 runs on 2 hits with 2 walks
