Lady Statesmen Win Series Against #21 West Alabama

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Lady Statesmen scored seven runs in the fourth inning of their win over #21 West Alabama. The Green & White recorded ten runs on ten hits in the game, including a grand slam by Sydney Pevey. Delta State's win on Sunday gives them the series win after splitting Saturday's doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UWA struck first with an RBI single and a two-run home run in the top of the first. Sydney Pevey picked up the first DSU hit in the bottom of the first. 3-0 UWA after one.
  • The Tigers fell in order and the Lady Statesmen stranded a runner in the second inning. West Alabama scored a run after a sac fly in the top of the third. Raegan Stafford drew a walk with one out in the home half of the third. She advanced to second on an error and later stole third. Pevey doubled with one out to score Stafford. 4-1 UWA after three.
  • UWA stranded another runner in the fourth after a walk. Calli McConnell was walked to start the bottom of the first and was relieved by pinch runner Marin Beeson. The next batter, Bailey Way, doubled to score Beeson and safely reached third on the throw in. Abbi Cataldo singled on a bunt as Way scored from third on an error. Cataldo moved to second when Emma Collier reached on an error. Mattie Granberry came in to run for Collier. Alyssa Gover reached on a fielder's choice, but Cataldo was out at third on the play. Granberry and Gover later stole third and second and MyCala Helms was walked to load the bases with two outs. Pevey then gave DSU the lead with a grand slam over the wall in left-center. Kyleigh Wheaton doubled in the next at-bat and was brought in on a McConnell RBI single. 8-4 Delta State after four.
  • West Alabama tied the game in the top of the fifth on an RBI double and a three-run home run. Delta State went in order in the bottom of the fifth. Tied 8-8 after five.
  • UWA left a runner on base after a leadoff walk in the sixth. Stafford singled to lead the bottom of the sixth and moved to third after two groundouts. Wheaton singled to score Stafford and regain the lead. McConnell doubled in the following at-bat to score Wheaton. The Tigers managed a base runner with one out in the seventh, but a fly out and a strikeout drawn out of pitcher Emma Enderud ended the game. 10-8 Delta State final.
On The Mound
  • Morgan Grubb started the game, pitching 4.1 innings. She allowed eight earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
  • Emma Enderud pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing no runs or hits with a strikeout and two walks.

UP NEXT
The Lady Statesmen are back in action this Tuesday (3/19) for a midweek nonconference doubleheader against the Southern Arkansas Muleriders. FIrst pitch for game one is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
