Ninth Inning Homer By Clay Cook Gives Statesmen Midweek Win Over #13 Southern Arkansas

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Delta State out-hits thirteenth-ranked Southern Arkansas 8-3 in their 1-0 win Wednesday afternoon. Clay Cook's ninth-inning home run was the lone run of the game in the Statesmen's midweek win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brett Burrell picked up the first hit of the game in the top of the first. SAU saw a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first, but stranded the runner. DSU sent three to the plate in the second as the Muleriders left the bases loaded. Drew Capobianco and Clay Cook picked up singles for the Statesmen in the third inning. Southern Arkansas left two on base in their half of the third after a double and an HBP. Tied 0-0 after three.
  • Hayden Cooper recorded a two-out single for the Statesmen in the fourth as the Muleriders fell in order in the home half of the inning. Both teams sent three to the plate in the following frame, including Jackson Wilson striking out the side in the bottom of the fifth inning. Burrell earned his second hit of the game in the top of the sixth. The Muleriders fell in order again in the bottom of the sixth. Tied 0-0 after six.
  • Hayden Cooper earned another hit in the top of the seventh, and the Muleriders left a runner on base after a one-out walk. Taylor Hickman picked up a hit in the eighth inning. SAU stranded a two-out hit in the home half of the eighth. Tied 0-0 after eight.
  • Clay Cook put the Statesmen on the board with a leadoff home run in the top of the ninth. Southern Arkansas fell in order in the ninth to give the Statesmen the win. 1-0 Delta State final.

  • Starter Hammer Franks pitched 1.2 innings, allowing no runs and one hit with three walks.
  • Duke Jordan pitched 1.1 innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts and a walk.
  • Jackson Wilson pitched 2.0 innings, striking out four while not allowing a run or a hit.
  • Christian Clayson pitched 1.0 inning and collected two strikeouts.
  • Tate Duncan pitched 1.0 inning, allowing no runs and hits with one walk.
  • Noah Magee earned the win for DSU, pitching the final 2.0 innings while allowing just one hit to four strikeouts.
