Statesmen Shutout Saint Leo in South Region Elimination Game

ST. LEO, Fla. – The Statesmen shut out host team Saint Leo in Friday's South Region elimination game. Blayke Dendy and Brendan McCauley hit home runs as the Statesmen pushed eight runs across in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saint Leo left a runner on base in the top of the first after a two-out single. Dylan Coleman also recorded a two-out single in the bottom of the first and came around on an opposite-field home run by Blayke Dendy. 2-0 Delta State after one.
  • The Lions left two on base after a leadoff single and an HBP in the top of the second. Brendan McCauley drew a one-out walk in the second. Taylor Woodcock battled back from an 0-2 count to send a full-count pitch into center field for a single and move McCauley to third. A double play ended the Statesmen's scoring threat in the second. The Statesmen defense caught two baserunners attempting to steal in the top of the third and finished the frame with a Drake Fontenot strikeout. Brett Burrell was left on base in the bottom of the third after a one-out single. 2-0 Delta State after three.
  • The Lions fell in order in the fourth as McCauley recorded a hit in the DSU half of the inning. Saint Leo stranded two more baserunners in the top of the fifth. Fontenot picked up another strikeout in the top of the sixth as the Statesmen also caught the third would-be base stealer of the game in the frame. Blayke Dendy and Hayden Cooper roped leadoff singles to start the bottom of the sixth. Dylan Dendy bunted the runners into scoring position just before McCauley turned on a three-run homer to extend the DSU lead. 5-0 Delta State after six.
  • Saint Leo left one on base in the top of the seventh. Warnock drew a walk and moved to second with no outs on a single by Burrell. Dylan Coleman reached on a fielder's choice that Burrell was called out on but moved Warnock to third. Blayke Dendy reached on another fielder's choice; Coleman was out at second on the play, but a bad throw into the DSU dugout allowed Dendy to advance to second as Warnock scored on the play. Cooper then singled to left to score Dendy from second. 7-0 Delta State after seven.
  • The Lions stranded two more in the eighth, including a leadoff double. Drew Capobianco reached on a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth and moved to second on a single by Matthew Nichols. Warnock kept the line moving with a single that scored Capobianco and moved Nichols to second. A double play ended the frame. 8-0 Delta State after eight.
  • Braiden Jones came in to pitch the ninth and drew a flyout and two groundouts to end the game and advance to Saturday. 8-0 Delta State final.
On The Mound
  • Starter Drake Fontenot pitched 6.0 innings, allowing no runs and five hits. He struck out three batters, walked one, and hit three.
  • Noah Magee pitched 2.0 innings, allowing no runs and one hit with a strikeout and two walks.
  • Braiden Jones pitched the ninth for the Statesmen, drawing a flyout and two groundouts with a walk.

The Statesmen will play the loser of the West Florida/Embry-Riddle (Friday 6:30 pm CT) game on Saturday, 5/18, at 1:00 pm CT. If the Statesmen won that game, they would play a second game on Saturday at 5:00 pm CT.
